aaaaaw thanks. *hugs back* :)

*orders a hot tea* first final today, but one I'm totally not worried about. *settles with tea and tries to stay warm in cold-ass apartment*
So, anyone wanna know what the first great cities of Europe were modeled after? How about Versailles?

lol, tis ok. well, the grid structure for towns (look at today's cities for that structure) used in many early European towns and cities was actually taken from a Greek called Hippodamus who drew up the plans for the rebuilding of Miletus after they were attacked by the Persians. This was the first real evidence of city planning, as all previous towns expanded by way of organic growth (such as Athens).
To skip ahead a millenia or so to Versailles (though a lot of interesting stuff city-wise happens between Athens and Versailles), it started out as a rural area but was made into 'the next Paris' because Louis XIV didn't like Paris (as a child in the regency he and his family were imprisoned in the Louvre [which was the royal palace before it became a museum]) and wanted to have his capital elsewhere. He made HUGE changes to the town in order to make it his new city, including the hiring of a gardener to put together huge, geometrically symmetrical gardens behind the palace (a mile and a half long and a half a mile wide, you could fit probably twenty of Louis' palaces in that single garden). This 'style' or 'design' was copied by multiple other royalties who came to Versailles, saw it, and said (in the words of my professor) "I gotta get me one of those!!" Some famous reproductions of Versailles are seen in St. Petersburg at the 'summer palace' and also in Hampton Court.

little tidbit of information: did you know that the man who designed Washington DC was French? (probably did, lol) his name was Pierre L'Enfant, grew up in Versailles, and we wanted him to create a city which directed everyone to a single central point in the city (if you look at an aerial map of DC, you'll see that this is true, and that it is modeled after Versailles, because in Versailles all the main roads lead to the palace). He designed the "People's Palace" which is, of course, Congress.

I'll stop rambling now :-P lol

I have become a Photobucket junkie, 'cause I have no time to be creative myself. And it's sooo easy to link from.
