I wasn't aware that Morgan Freeman wasn't a popular actor in 1994. Plus, wouldn't the name Stephen King draw people to the movie, bad title or no? Could've been advertising and/or timing with the release that could've hindered the box office results.
Also, what's the big deal about box office= success? I don't go to a movie just b/c other people like it; I've done that before, and I've been burned. (*cough "War of the Worlds")
And I don't think "Serenity" was such a bad title. Could've been better, I guess, but I'm not crazy about the suggestions already mentioned above. No offense.

What's important is not necessarily that the title conjures images relevant to the genre, but that the title attracts the interest of the targeted demographic.
For instance, as a guy, if I'm looking up what movies are playing, knowing nothing about them, and I see "Serenity", nothing about the title intrigues me enough to see what it's about. "I Am Legend", on the other hand, is interesting enough for me to want to see what the movie is about.

clearly the man's an idiot, I like the title "Serenity" and that not the reason why it flopped in the box office, it flopped because of poor marketing like everyone has been saying. I only saw commercials for Serenity on the Sci Fi Channel on Fridays during firely so ya.
It's not flopping in DVD sales so the man should stop talking, he doesn't know what hes talking about. And besides, its just the internet, anyone can publish stuff on the internet, if it were in a magazine I'd be more worked up about it.
Did anyone notice that the first 3 were sci fi(ish) films?

Apart from it being the name of the ship which is a code for the only place Mal can get some soul peace after the battle in the valley...
It reminded me of the titles "Soylent Green" and "The Minority Report".
I mean "Serenity" is what induced the situation on Miranda as well as being the final state.
So in the great tradition of "Blade Runner" and "Soylent Green" the title is a wonderful tangential reference to a big philosophical point of the work. It works on many levels. But the others had prior notoriety as novels.
For me the title "Serenity" was an unusual enough ocurrence of a word to make me want to know more.
How about
"Independents"
(okay the pun version would be "Independents' Day")
"The Lonely Bunch"
"Love and Death in Outer Space"
"The Little Guys"
"Reluctant Heroes"
I liked the Noir voiceover in Blade Runner.

Okay...honestly..this guy can simply kiss my browncoat tushie! You want to know why Serenity didn't do well...Because Universal Studios are a bunch of money grubbing, no soul having, absolute piles of go se! With the exception of one trailer, which in my opinion nearly made me need a change of pants after seeing it due to my very excitement. (Well that and the classic Wash line "Things are going to get exciting" "How Exciting" "Oh God we're all gonna die!!!" yes I know I paraphrased ..don't kill me..its still funny) I didn't see one bit of advertising about Serenity. NOT ONE BIT! What...did they all think were like River and would just KNOW what theater to go to in order to see it? I mean honestly, what the hell have these people been smoking? The sign of a movie's true sucess is its longevity at the Movie Rentals and DVD sales. I STILL can't get a copy of Serenity at both my local Blockbuster or Hollywood Rental. I have a copy of the movie...and I refuse to take it out because I'm just that much of a sentimental fool because its just so DAMN SHINY!!
