I just got it, having never seen the series that spawned it, and I thought it was great. Admittedly, it fell short when compared to FF/Serenity, but it was cool nonetheless.
And the similarities to our BDH's were definitely there- especially in the tough guy always looking for better deal (their Jayne), and the crazy dancing little girl that knew everything (their River).
I didn't get to see their ship enough, and that puzzled me; the Japanese cartoons usually dote quite a bit on their vessels...
Anyone wanna compare the movie to the series?

First: Definitely watch the series. You should probably have watched the series first but the movie doesn't really spoil anything of consequence so don't feel badly that you didn't. The series has a bit more with the various ships which is cool except they make the common mistake of banking and swooshing in space. It's traditional I suppose but still....

So you only watched the movie, "Knockin' On Heavens Door" right?
You really should watch the series, the movie was good, but the series is better

Yup you have to watch the series Chris. It's far better than the movie. The movie is fine, but you're only given a glimpse of the great dynamic the characters have with each other.
Spike is just about the coolest chap in the universe! A Great character.![]()

In other words, must I see them in sequence or not?

Yup there's an arc. It's best to see them in sequence. You'll enjoy them... The series has a cracking theme tune too. It's absolutely kick-ass. One of the best.....and hey, when I have I ever steered you wrong 'C'

How much for a boxed set of the whole series?
I know I'm ready to shell out some real coin for that, hell I sprung for the first season of Black Lagoon and the box set of Planetes.
I have lot of respect for Cowboy Bebop. In about twelve hours of anime, they developed four characters, five if you count ein, into a family, and showed them doing for each other. There's a funny sequence at one point, where Spike and Jet go to 'darkest Earth' to find a working Beta machine so that they can play a tape a younger version of Fay Valentine sent herself. Not sure if Fay would do the same, she's a lot like Jayne or Yosafbridge, but maybe she would.

BTW- any of you folks been catching Deathnote? Light and 'L' both strike me as wannabe Operatives, especially Light, but 'L' said that he 'sacrificed' the 12 FBI agents that Light killed with the Deathnote, which is either a mistake in translating the series to English, vanity or utter ruthlessness.
