Well, Tex, bottom line is, the studios in the TV and motion picture industries don't want to pay the Writers, like Joss, for example, either a fair (though miniscule) percentage of the DVD sales of their works, or, ANYTHING AT ALL for what is shown online by the networks and studios, or, that is sold for personal digital storage devices (ITunes).
The studios claim that they make no money (!) on those transactions, so, they don't want to promise the Writers a share of even nothing.
