They are co-stars of equal billing, both names above the title, and especially if by Serenity you mean the Battle of Serenity Valley. That is so much a part of what has made Mal what he is.

I'd say Mal is more of the heart of the show with Serenity being it's soul (if that makes any sense LOL).
