As flowers went... those filling the cabin access corridor were both pungent and kinda bushy - plain obstructin' to be telling plain.
The Captain had seen many eccentric sights on his ship and on many occasions - cows, dolls - hell even a possie of beagles - but... gorram! - a minature jungle in the hallway? Well - a man might take umbrage...
But then (as so often) there was Kaylee... fresh like a flower herself - and grinning eager out from between the leaves ... so what can you do?
"Shiny aint they Captn?"
"I was thinkin' more - green... an' over plentiful an' - why the ruttin' hell here?" Mal decided to atleast go through the motions of fierce.
Kaylee dodged - "An' aint like they need much attention - a l'il care is all - these are hardy, ok to keep inside - and cheery."
Mal brushed away an offending leaf to mock-glare with greater effect. "And they just happen to grow here now? Or maybe you planted a magic bean - coz that wouldn't surprise me greatly, Kaylee - in which case what did you trade for ... whatever these are!"
Kaylee scowled - it was a number five scowl, a multi-puprose - she had others ready if needs be.
"Weren't no tradin' - River got them me - a present to ME - someone got me a present - see? With the money you gave her..."
"Uh huh..." Mal knew a good deed would not go unpunished... after River had helped flush Jubal Early from the ship - it seemed fitting to show some thanks... even if doling money to the girl had seemed a mite... well, Fatherly.
Kaylee was still smiling - "River got herself a dress - real nice too - and she bought me these... for outside my door an'... places - feng shui, y'know?"
Mal nodded with his usual 'it's a madhouse' nod. "Places huh? - meaning...?"
There was a long echoing howl from below deck like a dying elephant.
"Meaning Jayne's in the engine room..." Kaylee rolled her eyes innocently.
The Captain sighed - then smiled. "Well, seriously l'il kaylee, if it's what you need after... well considerin' that Early well - if redecorating and shinying up my ship makes Jayne cry like a girl... that sits just fine with me."
There was the sound of rapidly approaching, large, heavy, angered feet.
"I love my Captain", grinned Kaylee - and she was gone into her cabin in a flash.
"Jayne!" said Mal pleasently, but bracing his legs.. "Need something?"
Jayne Cobb's reply has been duly censored.

hi, thanks - didn't see a reply comin'!
this was just (supposed to be) a 1-off quick morale boost during the hack attack... and knowing everyone would have to repost everywhere - hence the plant thing - haken is the captain of THIS boat - and we surely love him for it:)
stay shiny:)

Got it, sometimes I'm a bit slow on the uptake
But it really is a great begining to a story, you should continue it as soon as the floods subside.
And I agree Haken is very cool.
