just watched Damage again and it seems that Dana, the 'crazed' slayer is very much a template for River... though she (and the episode) never get a mention. Her hair, stance, movements and dialogue are all eerily reminiscent of River.

The escape from the mental asylum...

The kick ass - door smashing - lit from under 'hero moment'...

the madness caused by torture etc - and then the rescue by competing forces...

i can't believe joss didn't write it! apparently it was Steven S de Knight (who i wish had had a chance on firefly) and Drew Goddard... so a link there maybe...

the 'arc' of the episode from madness to remembering to 'some sort of a future' (nah, still a sack of hammers) is precisely River's.
(with more damage and less vomit!)

It's interesting you bring the Dana/River connection into discussion as it reminds me of a fan sort of trailer for a Buffy/Angel/Firefly/Serenity crossover I saw a while back and just tracked down.

Great observation. I have commented in the past, as have others, I'm sure of the 'crazy' girl syndrome that is often found in Joss's stories. Remember, Fred was 'crazy' and captive for a time, until she was rescued. Faith was nuts too, for a bit. And who could forget Buffy in the Mental Asylum ( or was she ? ) All intelligent, young, attractive women, with unique abilities, held against their will. Dana, last we heard, was the only one incapable of escaping her demons though.
