Actually, that's not especially true. Yes, he talked about once how Jason Mewes was really into BUFFY and that he'd re-enact episodes like a Ritalin kid that's been taken off of it, but he's never stated if he's ever seen BUFFY or ANGEL. And I know he's reticent to watching FIREFLY/SERENITY because he's afraid that he won't be that much into it and encur a fatwa from Browncoats everywhere. I know he's a huge fan of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, LOST and HEROES (he's doing an installment of HEROES: ORIGINS), but it's still unclear if he's into anything Joss does.
Which I hope gets sorted out. I always thought that it would be cool if he and Joss did a SModcast together. Most of the times, he does it with Scott, but he's had on Bryan Johnson, Walt Flanagan, Malcolm Ingram and even his wife Jen. And aparrantly, Jeff Anderson is going to do one with him.
But even though both of them are big comic book, sci-fi geeks that have their own army of fans that support their own little cottage industries, they travel in a lot of different circles. Kevin is still an indie filmmaker at heart and he hangs out with the likes of Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, Edgar Wright, Richard Kelly and Bob and Harvey Weinstein. I don't know who Joss hangs out with, but I'm sure they've never had a movie play at Sundance, Cannes or Toronto. And he's rather make movies with characters talking about sci-fi/ fantasy, as opposed to Joss who actually MAKES sci-fi/fantasy. Kevin has said that he always hates shooting like action sequences or purely visual stuff because he finds that stuff boring to shoot and edit, as opposed to dialogue scenes.
I dunno. As cool as it would be to see them together, I just think they're complete opposites. Joss always seemed to be a bit of an erudite Angelino, as well as an atheist feminist. And while Kev also writes strong female character, they normally take a backseat to the male relationships that's at the core of his work. Plus, he's a devout believer with a mouth and attitude as filthy as the Jersey shores he's proud to be from.
Just to be clear, when I say Joss is erudite, I mean that when Joss does solo commentary tracks, and maybe even a few group tracks, he always sounds very scholarly and educated. He sounds like he's teaching a course about his works. He's not likely to talk about his wife inadvertenly slicing his cock open or the time his little girl came into the room and watched them have sex. He's unlikely to get as candidly filthy as Kevin does on a regular basis.
And as per REAPER, still digging it. I'm intrigued as to why Sam's dad ripped a page out of the contract and burned it. And I loved that the demon that delivered the contract was played by none other than Cheif Tyrrol from BATTLESTAR.
Also, next week there's supposed to be a big BUFFY reference. You know how with BUFFY, they said that all the demons viewed Halloween as a day off? Same plot point works into next week's REAPER episode.

It's been several years since I've heard this, and I admit my memory may be a bit fuzzy, but I believe I remember that Kevin Smith said, when talking about Jason Mewes trying to get him interested in Buffy (which I recall now as being exactly how you described--with the ritalin re-enacting) he said something about wanting to wait until he can see the eps in order when they were all out on DVD (which obviously they are by now) or something, which I assumed he ended up doing because of a certain couple of acting choices for the Jay and Silent Bob movie (Eliza Dushku and Marc Blucas). I can see where he may have recognized Eliza outside of BTVS, but Marc? Doubting it. I can't see Jason Mewes getting that excited about him either, even though he clearly would have known who he was. Not that that's a slam on Marc Blucas ('cause I actually liked Riley and Marc's pretty yummy
) or anything.Then there was the thing he reportedly said at some fan convention thing (don't remember what it was) about not fucking with the Browncoats because they're cheering for a show that isn't even on. So clearly he was even well aware of the passion of Firefly fans.
Both led me to believe, possibly incorrectly, possibly not, that Kevin was into Joss's work by now.

Actually, I happen to own the DVDs of Kevin Smith's college tour, and he actually said that he was trying to get Jason to watch them, but Jason was waiting for season 7 to come out on DVD. The tour took place around 2005, after Jay and Silent Bob came out. So yes, Kevin is a huge Joss fan and you can definately see it in Reaper.
I hope that Kevin stays on as a consulting producer because he input and directing was what made the pilot so great.

For those looking for more BUFFY comparisons, tonight was a big doozy in terms of casting.
Tonight's demons were a thrill seeking couple that have a thing for muscle cars and crashing them and causing destruction. And the girl was played by none other than the Littlest Vampire herself, the girl that played Harmony on BUFFY/ANGEL. When I realized who she was, I sat up and grinned. And I loved that the vessel was an 8 track and that the tools they had were completely outdated technology.
I have to admit, I really like the casting that they do for the demons. Like last week, they had Patton Oswalt on the show as a very Clem-like demon who got along with the guys really well and was really big into psychology and therapy, as well as being a lunatic gun nut whose hand could morph into some kind of shotgun.
I hope this leads to some really cool guest stars as various escaped demons. Like maybe some BUFFY cast members, or as a meta thing, some D-list celebrities that are completely reviled so that you would want to see them dragged into Hell.
