I think I read somewhere that Inara, very early, was supposed to be a more rough-and-tumble actual whore, and a drug addiction might have played into that version.

We know Joss likes his "types".

I do, however, think that it no longer fits with the character Inara as she was eventually created.

She has enough complex issues that arise from what we've already seen and a drug addiction would just seems tacked on. It would, if anything, give a bland, trite reason for behaviors that would be more interesting if they were merely psychological.

i pretty much agree - i wonder if she was SICK?
we only have her word that the examination she had was 'routine'...

but that too could veer off to a predictable place i guess...

Interesting point!

It's uncertain what came first, Inara's relationship to Mal, or her character's concept, so we can't know whether HoG would have happened at all.

It does, after all, have a very specific purpose with regard to the relationship between the characters as they are now.

Plus, we did got one possible answer (for all its ridiculous elements): anti-rape poison injection. *thunder/lightning*

No saying, though, that this is what they would have eventually done.

Glad you bumped this as I'm still confused about her needle. I've read in numerous places that Tim Minnear stated that Inara's needle was some type of poison that she injects and whoever had sex with her dies. He cited a script idea with Reavers and Inara saving the crew this way.

However, on page 11 of the Firefly Official Companion Vol. 2, the man himself, Joss, says, when asked directly about the needle, "One of the things that I'm still going to keep for myself."

What gives?
