fedexxx: For what it's worth, I'm happy to accept your apology.
Part of the problem Rich has to deal with is it sounds like if it did work, it would have gotten used. My guess is he's trying to decide amongst:
1) Discontinue the poll.
2) Put in checks for autovoters (hard to tell a slightly randomizing autovoter from someone willing to pull all nighters like Ray).
3) Put in a 'check for human behind key board'
4) Disregard it as a false alert.
5) Something clever I can't conceive of.

The problem with 4) is that the reality is there's nothing to stop someone 'determined and competent' from writing an autovoter. I'm sure Flyvote could tweak Flyvote to be an autovoter. The difference is Flyvote (the poster) was smart enough to understand all the warnings on Rich's site that autovoters would not be tolerated.

I don't think that 2) can be done effectively.

My guess is he will go with 1) or 3); I'm hoping 3). Or perhaps he'll decide that the autovoter threat has not materialized and he'll be comfortable with going back to the status quo.

I hope you're right, as it would appear from the lexxfans site that the program was voting for firefly too.

Gorram right!

The first reported attempted use:

http://www.lexxfans.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1994

Was March 20 of this year. That was months before I even heard of TV Vote... And, it was also 206 voting days ago. If you multiply that by 24 hours, that's a potential 4,944 illegitimate votes... For ONE user. If there were say, three users of this form of digital voting steroids, that's a potential 14,832 votes that a number of shows could lose: Lexx, Firefly, Roswell... And, intermittently, Charmed, X-Files, and BSG, as well.

It also throws into question such particulars as our recent voting triumph; we might still have gotten by if, for example, 72 of our votes each day for the past 74 were invalid, but, I dunno for sure.

So, yeah, best to hope that it never worked. I also hope Rich is able to extract data on spurious 24 hour voting streaks (the kind for which no sleep was lost) without great difficulty, hopefully speeding up the process of correcting this.

It has been said, "Cheaters never prosper."

Well, in something like TV Vote, what's even the point? Even if no one ever catches you (and, given the safeguards in place, they eventually will), what possible satisfaction can be gained from it?

Oog.

He'll probably do something like - when you vote you have enter in a code/word - you know, the kind the have to stop spammers and auto sign-ups

It's a shame, esp if it affects us and all the hard we did. I doubt it should cus we've been over 1k way before this autovoter came in and our votes haven't seen a sudden rise. That program was never posted on any firefly site so hopefully it shouldn't affect us.

I already posted on the google group, but I wanted to write to you specially. If this is real final and the poll gets closed because of us - I have no words to say how sorry I am. However we should look optimistic at it - Firefly is first and will remain in the history as number one on this site and also as the most incredible fanbase, which had 75 consecutive days of 1000+ votes. It's not so bad for Lexx either, because we're still in the top 10. I'm only sorry for DS, who will be cut off from their chance of getting in the top 40 and for BSG, who wouldn't be able to get in their rightful top 5 place.
I'm still sure the script didn't work however.
Dunno what I can say.

Most important of all - Lexxians are extremely grateful for the help you gave us. I'll start voting for Firefly on tvtally from now on to show my gratitude. We're forever your friends! You kept us in the top 10 this long! THANK YOU!
Now let's not say goodbye, because I still think this is not over, but if that really is final, we'll forever remember the Firefly fanbase with good, no matter what you may think of us now :)

I have no doubt that adding a 'are you a human?' jumble-producer would have no repercussions on our vote tallies what-so-ever and I really hope that that is the way Rich proceeds so that we Browncoats can prove we weren't a part of the cheating.

We may "aim to misbehave" but if we ever kill you, "you'll be awake, you'll be facing {us}, and you'll be armed."

So if this is the end, thanks to all you helped run the site, flattop and the other number crunchers here at fff.net, and sister and all the other regular vumpers. At least we came out on top. Hopefully we'll get a chance to smash a few more records though.

I started voting for Lexx based on your request, and this is what you were doing? Dragging us in to your cheat?? We didn't even have a choice. Say what you want, you deserve a kick straight in to the engine.

If your hand touches metal I swear by my pretty floral bonnet, I will end you.

Just on thinking about this, the cheaters were still only getting about 250 per day. If the cheat was working, they would only need about 10 people to reach that. With just the number of Browncoats that were voting honestly, not counting the other folks that were helping them, that would throw their cheating votes even lower.

Makes me think either cheat program really wasn't working or something is wrong with my thinking.
