spent last night playing H3 with my adughter (mini-me). We were both freaking out every time we heard "Sgt. Reynolds". The pause button got used alot. Missed the Jayne references, guess I'll have to play it again (damn, I hate it when that happens)
I can see that there will be hours of enjoyment to be had just hunting down the various fandom nods!

Much love for the Fremgirl.. we have a 360, but the game lineup abysmally sucks so it's been basically a $400 paperweight since pounding Gears of War into the dirt, and the Fremgirl is an MMO enthusiast (FFXI) who's kinda pissed at Micro$haft for changing the rules AFTER we bought one, locking FFXI content ID and thus wrecking the ENTIRE* purpose of the purchase.
(Insert about 30 pages of hate for MS here.)
So when she heard that our BDH's were in Halo3, a FPS, I expected "Meh, that's nice..."
Yesterday after work, she tosses me a box, lo and behold, in spite of being reamed on the 360, our passionate hate of MS, and the fact that she has zero interest in FPS... she bought Halo3 as an act of pure fandom, and then ordered me to play it through!
I couldn't really identify Alan, I have trouble recognizing his voice anyways, but I heard Nathan in there a couple times - but Adam totally stands out, and not only is much of his commentary VERY Jaynelike, the character that voice is coming from even LOOKS like Jayne, with a goatee, but still, very recognizable.
Played it through end to end, quite rapidly, and other than totally superior voice acting on all counts (Ron Pearlman's in there too, as Lord Hood) it ranks in for me as a slightly better than average FPS minus the Halo and BDH fanwankery.
(The last two levels seem a bit rushed, and the ending, which I will not spoil here, I found unsatisfying.)
Multiplayer, it probably really shines, but I kinda had my fill of FPS multiplayer due to rampant cheating, hacks, teamkilling and screaming kids with ear-piercing voices who try to see how much profanity they can jam into a single sentence...
It does nicely help fill out the pathetic roster of 360 games and is visually nice, but the core gameplay is just more of the same and the storyline seems achingly contrived - were it not for the saving grace of fantastic voice acting, some of it on behalf of our BDH's, I wouldn't reccomend it for the price.
Hearing Adam talk Jayne smack at the Covenant is kinda worth it anyways, tho...

*she plays on PS2, and we wanted to be able to swap to her content ID or mine depending on who was using the PS2, and this was originally the case, then out of nowhere they locked hers to the machine permantly, and we had to go buy another PS2 instead - she's really, really NOT pleased about that.

Update, I got Alan, or what I think is Alan, as my gunner on the warthog for a while.
Am I even hitting anything ?
Why'd they make this thing so loud?!
Man this thing rips stuff up!
This is why I signed up!
There was another comment, about Nobody's Fault or No-Fault insurance or something, when I rolled the warthog after being rammed by a wraith, but I couldn't hear it too well over the wraiths plasma cannon trying to vaporize us as we cowered behind it.
I KNOW I heard Adam in there "Did we get em ?" at the conclusion of a rather nasty firefight.
Might update with some more if they're any good.

Sony does make PS2, but Square-Enix kinda broke tradition with them over their refusal to support their own hardware (you know, all those promises about the harddrive and downloadable content and oh, actually supporting FFXI, let's not forget that one...) and then offered FFXI on the Xbox360 platform as well, so we got a 360 instead, only to have to buy another PS2 on top of it when M$ shafted us by locking content id.
Also heard in game.
Alan - "I like the part where he kills everybody."
Adam - "Gimme the gun, i'm in a baaad mood!"
"Well just don't stand there, start shootin folk!"
There's also a little kinda tribute to the battle of serenity valley in the first level.
After Sgt Reynolds reports brute contact and then the channel goes dead, at one point you come around a corner and there's a brute holding Reynolds up in the air about to do something very unpleasant to him - IF you are a good shot, and quick, you can nail the brute and save him, and shortly after that he starts ranting about how they "Killed all my men.." I didn't get a good listen as a bunch of grunts kinda swarmed into us, but it's a nice touch.
Also, a funny funny conversation can be heard en route to secure the hangar... when you go down the long hallway, instead of making a left into the doorway, keep going till you come to a blast door - there's a smaller door to the right, and a marine having a VERY amusing conversation with the one on the other side of it.
I haven't gotten it yet, but apparently one of the secret items (skulls?) unlocks additional dialogue... I will try to grab that and see what happens.
