I hope your right about the DVD I'm holding off getting more VHS of Blakes's 7 because I hear it's comming to DVD. Blakes's 7 was to my knowlege the first sci-fi show to have a real story arch. JMS says he got much inspiration from Blakes's 7.

Have you tried Babylon 5? I found it a little slow to start off with but once it hit it's stride it was very involving with lots of really interesting characters...
and it was fun getting to see some old time favorite actors show up as bad guys!

It's good to see someone bring up Cleapatra 2525 it was allways on after the bars closed. Basicly just some women in kinky outfits shooting lasers by the time the stupidity of the show started to wear thin it was over just a half hour. As I said it was on after the bars closed it helped to have a buzz on before you watched it.If you haven't seen it it's on Sci-Fi channel Saturday night.
And let us remember Gina Torres stared in this show before Firely it's a trip to watch her in that role. She played Hel.

I actually have the whole series of Blake's 7 on vhs, that i taped off of PBS in 1986! I still watch them occasionally, but the quality is not what it used to be, needless to say. Those tapes have made the rounds in the last 18 years - I've loaned the whole series out to at least a dozen people, who have all gotten hooked instantly.
The story arcs were what attracted me to the show too, as I had never seen any show with an ongoing storyline before. Awesome stuff!

Blake's 7. Wow. That really takes me back. Anybody remember "UFO"? It was a British show from the 60s.
I want to go on record about Farscape, though: It was only mediocre. Either the characters were too much of a stretch for the actors (the "sensual priestess" comes off instead as "flirty when it adds comedy" and serious all the rest of the time), or the characters were 2-dimensional (compare Dargo's range of emotion with Warf's inner conflict). The show was okay, but it was not great. The stories often felt contrived, too. She was a vegetable-based lifeform? Uhh ... okay.
For my money, I don't care if Deep Space 9 was derivative of other works. It was still good stories, well-acted & filmed.
Babylon 5. Epic. Losing the main psychic hurt the show, in my opinion, but it was still epic. I give it 4 stars, same as DS9.
Andromeda (starring Kevin Sorbo) was pretty good, until they swapped Necheans (sp?). I don't much like what they're doing with Trance's character, either. Personal bias. The show back in the first or second season where she's captured, and psychologically tortures her interrogator ... classic stuff. She's been downhill for a long time.
Speaking of actors morphing characters away from The Vision ... what's up with Alan Tudyk? The guy just doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the cast. All the rest of them seem to have that "team" mentality, but he just comes off as being about himself. Maybe I'm reading him wrong. As a result, he's taking the character in directions (comical ones, at that) which I don't really appreciate.
*sigh* Was taking. I guess, though, with the movie coming, perhaps he'll be taking it in that unwelcome direction in the future ... *crosses fingers*
And the best Doctor Who was clearly Pertwee.

While she wasn't one of my favourite characters, I'd have to disagree about the characters being a stretch for the actors - Ben Browder and Claudia Black in particular nailed their parts. I can understand where you are coming from with some of the characters (Granny was just plain wierd and annoying, and Jewel rarely failed to grate) though.

I presume we are talking about the same Worf who only remembered his Klingon heritage when Ron Moore got given a show to do? Yes Dargo was a Klingon rip-off, but in general he kept the "alien" side of his nature in place throughout the show's run.

Didn't see that myself - Wash was very much a comic character as written, and the only example I can think of where he went in a direction other than the one Whedon intended was when he became terrified rather than ice cool pilot that one time, but I recall that Tim Minear held his hands up on that one. Was reading an interesting extract of an article on Aaron Sorkin on the West Wing, and the way he would stand at the side of the set and mumble the words the actors were saying, tapping his foot to find the rhythm he heard when he wrote it - then giving the actor notes to capture that. Watch some of the West Wing and you can understand when he describes the scripts as being like sheet music.

I wouldn't hold my breath, but it's something. I'm also pleased that the Sci-Fi channel is going to grant Farscape a grand finale as a mini-series in Farscape: Peacekeeper War (or something like that).

UFO was a Gerry Anderson production... It was produced in 1969/1970 and aired in the US around 1972-1973. Only one season. It's available on DVD now.
Does anyone remember The Starlost? A canadian production of a multi-domed ark in space... with Keir Dullea.

Harlan Ellison's lost series as I recall - haven't seen it but read what it was meant to be.
