Start first with a beard trim. Bring it down to a half inch. shape your beard. It won't be a radical face change, but you will look cleaned up.
Take this in steps.

nope. no clean shaven. did that for too many years in the army. i've had some version of a beard for 15 years now. i will trim it back a bit though, haven't decided how much as yet.

now wait a minute...we decided 2 inches...and some shaping...
