LOCATION – BOOKS ROOM - INTERIOR
As luck would have it, she has the correct room. It is only a second before the door slides opens and BOOK gives a welcome gesture into his room “Come in, Mercedes Troy”. He drops something into a pocket, while turning up the light to a brighter level. To MERZ, it looks as if he may have troubles of his own, and she is a little reluctant to speak. But, selfish as it may be, she is puzzled and confused – and more than once speaking to a sympathetic someone has been useful. She is going to try it again. She is standing a parade rest in the center of the room and fully intends to stand until she has asked her questions. That will make it easier for him to eject her, if it comes to that.
“To start with, I would like to apologize in advance. As I have already offended several persons onboard; I do not expect this to go any easier. Please understand that any offense I give you will be completely – inadvertent.” She pauses and collects her thoughts.
“Second, I was told that you were a person who would listen if someone needed to talk. As of right now, I am still unaware of what the title ‘Shepherd’ entails. I do not know how to address you; if you are a superior or an equal. You have a great air of dignity; I am inclined to consider you as a superior. Sir, I appreciate anything you can tell me that would assist my assimilation into this crew, before I make a fatal error.
“Last. I have, as I think may show, been somewhat secluded from society. During a short sojourn with others, I learned certain behavioral rules that allowed me to function briefly without (mostly) offending those I was with. Since boarding Serenity it seems that a different set of rules, at least in part, apply. I suppose that my question is, how does one go about learning the rules every time you meet a new group of people. It is a very big universe out here. And . . . I am . . . very confused.”
“Oh and Sir, when is clothing, or the choice to remain unclothed, appropriate?”
