The Firefly Five Year Anni-Verse-ary is just around the corner. What better way to celebrate than to actually post something! I’m not exactly new to this site; been visiting constantly since 2005. I just felt like I should do more to help save the ‘verse during this crucial CE time. I’ve decided to overcome the fear of knowing I’m not a writer, and throw something I think is good together (except for that one thing). I don’t think I would do this for any other franchise.
These are just *some* of my thoughts and things from the different Firefly milestones.
Five years ago....
“How does the water buffalo fit in again?” - Slayer, The
While watching my daily dose of Buffy on F/X in August of 2002, I saw the commercial for Firefly. I know most people hated that commercial for dumbing down the concept, but it made me want to see the show. A sci/fi show with ships, guns, a crazy pilot who plays with dinosaurs, a space hooker (all together now: Daaaaamn!), a naked girl in a box, and a tough guy named Jayne (played by the Knowle Rohrer supersolder from “The X-Files”). And all created by Joss Whedon? Sign me up!
“Time for some thrilling heroics.” - The man they call Jayne
The Train Job aired on Sept. 20, 2002
Started in a bar.
The good guys (rebels) in the war wore browncoats (ha, war wore!).
The show has that old Star Wars with normal folk feel.
The teaser was full of Joss humor. The moment you see the BDHs playing Chinese Checkers instead of poker you know it’s going to be wacky cool show.
Liked the show for the same reasons I liked Buffy: It’s not about the popular people, but
has a variety of different personalities; the humor mixed in with all the other stuff (action/drama); the stereotypical settings of genres with a twist (teen drama with monsters / space/western that made sense); and all the cool, funny and sexy characters.
The fact they were outlaws was icing on the cake. Oh, and the kickass ship.
When I saw that the “girl in the box” was already out of the box, I thought I came in a week late. Either that, or maybe she gets in the box later. Didn’t bother me too much, since I was already in love with the show at that point. Seeing the guy from the X-Files being funny was too cool! Coming down off the X-Files, I was used to Adam Baldwin playing a dark, informant guy. It was great to see Adam in a much more well rounded
role.
When I first saw Inara my eyes smacked the tv from six feet away.
“Command says it’s too hot. They’re pulling out. We’re to lay down arms.” - Zoe
The Pilot aired on Dec. 20, 2002; my Birthday.
I thought it was a rerun of the first episode that I missed. I didn’t know at the time, it had
never aired before. Not until the shot of Serenity landing at the docks did I think “Hey,
was this the first episode?”. Before that there wasn’t anything I remembered being from the commercial.
When River gets out of the box we learn she’s not just a crazy reader, but is a super genius.
Kaylee likes strawberries, a lot.
Before the DVD, I thought the episodes originally aired in the correct order. I figured that maybe Joss wanted to get the audience’s attention first and make sure they would stick around before filling us in on the backstory. Kind of like what “Lost” does now.
Bought the Firefly DVD in April of 2005
I knew the DVD had been out before this, but I wanted to wait until I had an actual job before buying tv shows on DVD. Of course, once I got paid Firefly was one of the first things I bought. When Firefly aired I thought I missed some episodes. As it turned out from looking at the DVD boxset, I hadn’t missed a one. To this day, I swear I remembered Book coolly staring down a gun from a cop, sectors out of his jurisdiction, BEFORE I even got DVD. Weird.
Discovered Fireflyfans.net in May of 2005
I was Google-ing Firefly and there it was.
This is where I read the that movie was really being made.
I’ve been a lurker here for a while now. Mostly, I live in the tag box.

I believe with your newfound voice that'll be a lot more certain now. Please don't hush again, ok? How in the world have we done without you??

Oh crap, did I overhype myself?
Oh, I didn't take French and I failed Engish class a lot so, I won't notice.

Rahl, sweetums, you've been signed on longer than I have, I think.
I know I've seen you on the running wheel in the Tag for years.
But truly your first post?
You look right shiny in that coat, BTW.
And here right freakin' here are the berries in all their fragrant, juicy redripeness. I've whisked the cream my ownself, with just a touch of sugar, and the merest soupcon of Santho spice.
You know the routine around here, ranging from ice-planets to ShipsCat.

It's 11-84-4! Get it right!
It kinda looks like one of those foreign dates with the numbers all mixed around. Maybe somebody's B-day, just not mine.
Yes, I've been around a while. And even though I know (<-this almost sounds like a song) the people here are nicer and cooler than any where else, my public(that was close!) speaking/posting fear still had its grip on me.
One of the biggest reasons for NOW was all the slowness around here.
[Cue rant] I mean the Collectors Edition was just released people, you're supposed to yapping about it, a lot! Maybe too much, but that's what we're supposed to do. We're all a bunch of crazy, obsessed fans here, because Firefly was THAT GOOD and no body(in power) cared. We are here because the show wasn't a success, we might wouldn't have been half as passionate about the show if it was still on the air right now! Are the Lord of the Ring fans this obsessed? I doubt it. They (and I. Yes, I like LOTR) got 3 big movies which everyone and their neighbor's little brother saw! OUR Big Damn Movie was waaaay better than Episode III (what isn't), yet Serenity can only break even enough to not be considered a failure(in *their* minds)! I WANT MY BIG DAMN SEQUEL/TRILOGY/SEASON 2!!!
[End Rant]

Wohaa, theeis allw dla basht straaberrzs evwa, nyammm.
(Wow, these are the best strawberries ever, yum.)
Hey, put a strawberry in the middle of an ice-planet, and it has its own core!
Thanks for the strawberries Bunny(like Bunny fron Sonic the Hedgehog?). And for the ice-plan- what the 'eck is a ShipsCat?
*hands a kevlar/leather browncoat to everyone in the thead*
For those times when things don't go to the gorramn plan.
