The movie owner only gets about half the theater revenue. But Josss has intimated that other revenue sources (TV, DVD, etc) have brought in enough to push the income close to the total expenses (which are more like $50 million, as you have to include marketing.)

Theatrical Performance
Total US Gross: $25,514,517
International Gross: $13,000,000
Worldwide Gross: $38,514,517
Considering the production budget was a reported $39,000,000, it just squeaked under breaking even in the theaters. Bring in DVD, HD, and Special Edition sales, and seems like Universal has probably made a tidy little profit off the whole thing.
So how much Serenity merch do I have to buy to get a sequel?

Actually what Joss Whedon said just recently, is:
"So after all is said and done, was Serenity profitable? Do you consider it a success?
Joss Whedon (JW): It's a success to the studio or else we wouldn't be doing a special edition DVD. They actually admitted as much on paper, which you know studios are loathe to do, and that was actually from the theatrical. Theatrical was a disappointment, as everyone knows, but it did go into the black."
There have been differing opinions about this, but Whedon would be in a good position to know and he never mentions that his info has anything to do with TV Rights.

I'm surprised and dismayed that the International revenues were so low. I would think that folks over in Asia, who are generally rabid movie-goers would have loved and embraced the BDM for its' action and Oriental influence. But I guess not...or was it that it wasn't distributed on a large basis around the world.

Seems to me I recall at the time that many of the foreign showings were canceled as the box office dropped.
Didn't allow for many showings nor much money making.
I guess Uni figured the expense outweighed the profit.

What Joss is implying is that the DVD sales were spectacular. And sometimes they are, returning more cash to the studio than the theatrical release. The studios love stuff like that. Sort of a third act, with a happy ending, after a poor showing in the theaters, and a thin TV deal. Hey, just like in the movies...

I've lost faith in something, but I haven't decided in what yet.

Should I distrust this site or humanity as a whole?

So....if the movie made money in the theaters (Joss said the studio admitted it got into the black) and DVD sales did well enough to get a Special Edition release which also did fairly well....why aren't we seeing a countdown to Serenity 2 on the main page of this website????
Seriously, why not?
