just re-watched the end of serenity
and it never fails to move me
(as it moved Joss, just check his commentary) where Mal and River are in the cockpit
and he looks at her 'with love' (joss's words).
it IS such a pure moment (that the actors are sharing)
and i think it defies the tricky fic norms
of who couples with whom or who is parenting whom.
plus it wraps the frame of the film so nicely from the Operatives 'It's Love' to that moment in the ship.
given the complexity script to character to actors' moment - i sometimes wonder what kinda prose can do justice at all... don't stop us trying tho people!

Definetly a movie "defining moment", like you said.
And Mal's words of wisdom to River and really all of us, LOVE... pure and simple, that defies explanation.

I, too, noted that scene with interest.
However, where does this 'parent' thing come from? The whole 'Captain Dad' thing is beyond disturbing.
