Anything by Ken Russell.
Strangely (perhaps), anything by Kubrick. Anybody who says they truly understand the final 20 minutes of "2001: A Space Odyssey" is either deluded, lying or high. Hell, even Clarke didn't know what it meant, and he wrote the screenplay/novel as it was being filmed. All that inhaling/exhaling throughout the 'open the pod bay doors, HAL'; how nerve-wracking was that?! And as much as we all might love AB in "Full Metal Jacket", the film had its share of Weird ("What is your major malfunction, Private Pyle!"). ...And don't forget "A Clockwork Orange", my droogies and "Eyes Wide Shut" (a.k.a, "What Do Scientologists Get Up To In Their Spare Time?").
So, Ken Russell = trippy-weird and bad...Stanley Kubrick = trippy-weird and good (L. Ron Hubbard Religion-As-Tax-Shelter propaganda films notwithstanding).

"Battlefield Earth", by L. Ron Hubbard, starring John Revolta and spouse (flaunting her oral talents) is not Weird, it is just perfectly unintelligible. That's not the same thing.

Cemetary Man. Inconsistant mood. Strange plotline. And Rupert Everett boning down on a hot chick. Makes sense at the end but definately wierd.

As a lifelong disciple of Kubrick's, yes I agree that his movies are really bizarre and fucked up, but they are in a good way. Not only can you understand them, but you can get a whole bunch of different understandings in his movies. They're like ink blots. Different people see different things in them.
At first, I was like "EYES WIDE SHUT isn't a L. Ron Hubbard Religion-As-Tax-Shelter propaganda film. BATTLEFIELD EARTH definitely is, but this isn't." But then I realized that was a the beauty of the film to some degree. You see it as that, and I see it as a glorious swan song that hopefully very soon will be considered the classic that it is.

Hey I love this film. It's one of my favourites. I used to have it on video but lent it to a friend who never returned it, and now he moved elsewhere so I'm never seeing that again.
I just loved the way they filmed the food, and the best bit had to be the old master of eating noodle soup going around noodle bars with his student (a would be great noodle soup eater in the making.) Very funny film and one that makes you hungry as you watch.
If I remember correctly the director was shot and killed I believe in his hotel room, I think that's right... It was a long time ago so...

I know folks that have seen Battle Royale. It's more well known than you think.
Hey no need to apologize... I was more interested in seeing if I could see a pattern in peoples choices. Funnily enough I think I can but I'll come to that later.
Brazil I think is wonderful. Munchausen for a cartoonist is a treat and loads of fun.
So did Battle Royale not have much of a release in the US? Over here it's huge. Most of my friends have seen it and it's sequel. It's very popular this side of the pond.
I saw 'Oh Lucky man' when I was ten or so and for me at that age it was weird, I've probably become immune to a lot of weirdness over the years, but recently there has been a slew of horror films that are just weird because they have absolutely no resolve or point, but that seems to be a current trend and I find that weird...
But anyway... Nice to see you around again TWG.

Have this of DVD. D'you know I tried convincing my best friend that this film even existed. And he gave me a deadline to find it and if I didn't he would regard me as just some fraudster. Anyway I did find it and when I showed it to him he was surprised at how many current actors were in it! Christopher Lloyd, Jeff Goldblum, John Lithgow and Peter Weller.
I think the official title is:
"The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai and the Hong Kong Cavaliers across the 8th Dimension" it was Directed by W.D. Richter who wrote Big Trouble in Little China.

Kubrick has to be considered a Western master of Weird, if one takes the long perspective of his body of work. His concentration on the biological aspects of his characters -- i.e., breathing, blinking, nervous gulping -- is downright claustrophobic, and evokes a visceral response without the use of gore.
And I wasn't really serious about "Eyes Wide Shut" being a propaganda film; but there is no available emoticon to indicate my wry sense of humor. I apologize. It was more a commentary on the cast than the filmmaker. You know, "Those darn Scientologists! Always getting up to the kinky games after they knock off work!" sort of wryness. ...Not that they do, mind you. I mean, who knows what Scientologists actually do? Maybe I should ask Tom. He undoubtedly has studied this subject for a number of years and knows more about it than I possibly could... (insert emoticon which reflects my intent to tweak Tommy's nose, just a bit, for being such a dick on national TV)
The good thing about Kubrick's works is that they are still accessible, though Weird, as you pointed out. David Lynch's works, otoh, are what I'd classify as Bizarre: They may be enjoyable and memorable, but quite frequently they are also indecipherable; they are frequently like memories of bad dreams. Others may not make that distinction between Weird and Bizarre, so I'd nominate his "Eraserhead" as the most Bizarre Western-made film I have ever seen, very dreamlike in its disjointedness.
Which brings me to the Eastern films, specifically Japanese movies. These are neither Weird nor Bizarre, in my estimation. The Japanese world-view is so different from that of the West, as to fail to correspond. I love anime. For the artwork. The plots make no sense whatsoever. Ergo, Japanese films are Alien, not Weird.
Remaining in the East, Chinese films are not particularly Alien. I quite often find myself moved to tears at the end of Chinese-made films; "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", "House of Flying Daggers"... It never even occurs to me to be moved by a Japanese film. There is something exquisitely beautiful, true and emotionally common to our Western experiences in Chinese-made films.
They even have a Weird one, which nevertheless manages to pull it all back together (more or less) by movies' end, leaving this viewer feeling emotionally moved, uplifted: "Kung Fu Hustle".
