Probably resolved but....Book is all innocent and non worldly in the recent time at least, as he says to Inara that he 'thinks he's on the wrong ship'.She lays her hand on his head and scene is all reversed from the time he waS unsure about her companion professon.
So when does Book become all action, alliance knowing ex opperative?

maybe guilt?
maybe realising the love of these people for REAL and for NEW and not just from repudiating/hiding his past
brings that past back to him and he can be open to it a little more?
