Just thought I would bump this for anyone who wanted to rec any summer reading fics. I started looking in the BlueSun for fics I may have missed, being that we don't have any new canon to inspire, lately.
I've been reading RIVERISMYGODDESS's work mentioned above (nice job, by the way) and I found a little unsung gem by GEEKUSA- Firefly: Second Season Series (unfinished post BDM)
And of course Jetflair's manifesto on Mal's character roots in "The Losing Side".
Also, my first sort of crossover, "VOID" by Nisus, over at ff.net (post BDM, great plot with all characters present, but mostly M/I and River -"the trio")... No! Not like that! Just read you'll see.
I like plot driven fics with canon pairings and believable character growth and dialog, that don't stray to far from the themes and tone of the show/movie. I like insights and exploration of the relationships, but nothing to slurpy or shippy. I don't want to have to be convinced of anything.
Soo? What's everyone reading? Any recs?

MAL4PREZ!!! Mal4PrezMal4PrezMal4PrezMal4PrezMal4PrezMal4Prez!
I can't rec her enough. There's 'ship (cannon), but like the show, it's a balance of adventure, humor, drama, and a little bit of the 'ship. All the characters get pretty much equal time. Each character voice rings true.
I'm addicted to her ongoing series, I'm not ashamed to say.
Start with The Fish Job, then Easy Tickets, then Back Stories (which is a WIP). Enjoy!

Thanks for the Rec, EmpireX...I have to confess, I read Mal4Prez's stories out of order (Duh) and they are BRILLIANT in everyway. Recently, I've had more time to reread some chapters and now Backstories is makin a whole lotta more sense, especially River's fantasys and where her head is at this juncture and not being able to connect and help Mal this time. *sniff*
I'd be curious to what you think, I know we won't get much out of the supreme writing goddess herself. Her lips are sealed.
Thanks Again!

If it's action you're looking for, hewhokicksalot wrote a lovely screenplay entitled "A Mighty Thorn in a Mighty Paw" that might fit the bill. Lengthy, but worth the read.
Wish I could recommend my own, but they tend to be shippy!

Here are some of my favorite fics
"The Losing Side" by Jetflair. A character study of Mal set in the Alliance POW camp. It's now at over 52 chapters but well worth the read. Her insight int his character is uncanny.
For pure adventure, anything by ScrewtheAlliance, http://www.fireflyfans.net/fulluserbluesunlist.asp?un=ScrewtheAlliance Unfortunately his latest, "Unfinished Business" is updated only sporadically because he's in the middle of writing an actual book for money.
I'll second anything by Mal4Prez and if you like a continuing story updated almost every day, you'll enjoy Jane0904.
It's almost like one of those old timey serials at the movies. She even leaves you hanging at the end of the chapter with a cliffhanger.
It's post BDM and just like the series, there's action, anst, humor and even a little sex. She keeps the ships canon except for for Mal. He and Inara never get together. In fact, he's married to an OC but she fits right in with the crew as she's a Browncoat and a former student at the Academy.
Also, Tamsibling, in accordance with her name is Simon/Kaylee centric but not to the exclusion of other ships. She has lots of action and adventure for all the crew too.

Thanks for the recs fellow Browncoats!
And to you authors, Thanks! I know you put a lot of time and effort in your work. And all of you are prolific and talented writers, and that includes you Jane0904.
I do tend to stay within canon boundaries, especially in post BDM longer fics. Short stand alones can be fun, with alternate pairings and endings, but not a whole verse. Sorry, not for me. I have to read enough Persuasive Essays as it is.
I don't know if that makes me a purist or a traditionalist, but I DO know that I want it to be JOSS that gives us the continuation of his story, in his verse.
We need a sequel soon! Give everyone the Special Edition for Christmas!

BTW, BackStories book II is being beta'd - in exchange, I'm betaing an excellent continuation of Leiasky's On the edge, so you'd best all read that again to get ready!
Neither of us are done, but we're making progress...

Like I mentioned earlier, mal4prez, I read ET before The Fish Job so my timeline had a few gaps. Once I went back and read The Fish Job and viewed Objects in Space one more time, I was able chart River's slide into somewhat of an altered reality abyss... that we also pretty much witness in the BDM.
By the time of Serenity, Mal is obviously dark and closed off. All she is able to feel from him is his despair. Whatever help she was able to provide in the past (like with Early) is no longer available to her. It certainly gives new meaning to Mal's "she is still crazy" instead of "not quite right". I love her wearing that childlike snow-spacesuit.
River isn't feeling very cherished or valued anymore... except to be exploited while helping on a job. And Inara isn't there to scold... Mal!!! LOL
Just some observations that I've noticed that connected well with her portrayal in your fic. And the events connecting the stories.
Good to here that you're still writing. I'm looking forward to Leiasky's sequel, also. Not so much with dying of characters, though.
Oh, well , I'll still read and rave.
