Military Browncoats--Front and Center!!

I feel like a military browncoat sometimes! But I didn't have what it took to be int the real thing! :(

I'm not strictly speaking military, but I work for Army/SMDC as a g-man.

Not actual active-duty myself, but have been married to a sailor for nearly 12 years and work for the Navy, too. My organization's unofficial motto is "Semper Gumby" Always flexible.

I too am a veteran, Army, Psychological Operations, Ft. Belvoir, VA. Been out four years now since having children.

BUT my husband was a ranger also, he served in the 1/187th Inf out of Fort Campbell before going Ranger in 1994. He got out in 96 to become an officer, can you believe it? He went Green to Gold (name of the program, I didn't make it up) and now is a Captain in the National Guard Field Artillery in Colorado.

I have to also say that our hearts are with those deployed right now and here's to wishing them a safe return. My husband just returned one month ago today. Was gone eleven months. Life is good. Husband home and we have a shepherd!

The war in Kuwait did precisely what it was intended to do: it beat back the Iraqi invasion force, liberating Kuwait and defending the surrounding nations from the threat of Iraqi aggression. Give me a break. We did it exactly right. Saying otherwise is 20/20-hindsight handwringing.

Second issue: we are not throwing away lives. The men and women that have died in Iraq died doing their duty. They died in the service to their nation. They died to rid the world of a psychotic dictator with dillusions of grandeur. They died ridding a nation of an oppressor. I was there. I saw them wave at us, smile at us. I saw children shouting, "USA, number one!", and men chanting, "Yes, Bush!" Don't you dare tell me that my fellow servicemember had their lives thrown away. The pap that CNN feeds you doesn't inform you. You don't know what they're doing over there. Until you acquaint yourself with the reality of what we accomplished in Iraq, don't you dare presume to tell me that we're throwing our lives away.

I swore I wasn't going to get into a huge blow-up about politics and war ethics, so I won't respond in kind.

I will answer only the question of when this opinion was stated.

Eve, my beloved little sister, who suffered from some horrible desert sand bug that tried to turn her insides to mush -- she who was medically retired from the Army after suffering horrible injuries which took her three years to recover from -- it was she who WHILE STILL IN KUWAIT IN 1991 phoned me to ask, "Why aren't we finishing this? Why aren't we doing this right. When we have to send people in 10 years from now to finish the job, I'm going to ask George Bush 'why'.

It's not 20/20 hindsight. It's not the BS handed out by corporate owned, government teat sucking media. It is the stance I took during the first Gulf War, which I supported even though all we were doing was protecting our oil producing butt monkeys from our oil producing former butt monkey.

I supported that and wondered why we didn't finish the job.

We encouraged the Kurds to rise up. We said we'd help them. Instead, we watched as Saddam crushed them underfoot.

At the picnic welcoming Eve and all the rest of her guys home, they all stated that they knew we'd have to go back and that when we did, lots and lots of kids were going to die needlessly because we could have finished Saddam off when momentum and the world were on our side.
