I checked and even when he was extremely fit (I think his body fat was 4% or something) my stepdad weighed 225, so someone a few inches taller than him would definitely be... difficult to haul around. Even someone his size would have difficulty hauling someone his size around if they were passed out.
No, there's never specific mention of what they do aside from "gravity regulation". Firefly has always been kind of light on the 'science' part of the science fiction.![]()
Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.
A troll's hair is still pointy, even when it's wearing a hat.

Plus, a human being is an awkward size and shape to be carrying. My high school had some weighted, life size dummies (not sure why) and believe me, they were real difficult to move around, even for the muscle bound types. And don't bother with how much Book can bench press. There's a difference between pushing a couple hunred pounds up and down and trying to haul it around without dropping it.

Op: You're fighting a war you've already lost.
Mal: Yeah, well I'm known for that.

Besides the fact that Jayne would honestly be heavy, keep in mind the humor involved in the scene. Dude was lying on the stairs half looped. The reason, Kaylee *whines* that he was heavy as if he were a crate of parts as opposed to a man.
If he weren't *whine* heeeeeaaaaavy he wouldn't be crumpled on the stairs being all drugged and funny . . . and he wouldn't have been able to save mal with his half looped shootin'.
I don't think Kaylee calling him heavy was too terribly deep.

Likely the exagerated reaction of an old (in shape, but still old) man hit but the awkward dead weight of a 230-ish pound man with heavy clothes and equipment in the bargain....

Also, muscle tissue has a higher density than fat. It weighs more... hence the solid ton. It's just confirmation that Jayne's bulk really is predominantly muscle.

In the "Serenity" movie during the heist Jayne clotheslines a guy so hard he flips completely upside down and then catches him by the feet...
When something that seemingly silly happens I look for an explanation. The crew talking about Jayne being so heavy was my in to explaining that kind of strength.
Gravity is a good theory too, I like that. You might end up with very dense muscle mass in that situation.

I think they did that because it looked cool.
