I don't think there was enough Jack in the finale.

The ending was a tad messianic, maybe

I liked the way they (ab)used the horribly cliche'd "quest for the five segments of the maguffin" plot device that (especially if you'd watched the "infinite quest" animated adventure shown earlier).

Looks like we'll be getting a new (at least part-time) assistant - I vote for Sally Sparrow!

Just a few more thoughts...

Sally Sparrow would have my vote too.
But Martha will be back, even if it is as a semi-regular

But whoever they bring in as a new regular companion...please, no more "family" dramas.
I liked it when they dealt with Rose 'disappearing' for a year and her friends & family having to deal with that. It was something never brought up in the original series and I am glad they did it because it made sense and was important to show that aspect.
Martha's family got to be really annoying. All the bickering that was going on, her sister constantly trying to get respect from the other family members for these great jobs she was getting, her mother just being really stupid and not trusting in her own daughter's choices. The only one I didn't dislike was her brother and that was probably because he wasn't in many of the stories the others were.

Interesting news release from the BBC...

Select to view spoiler:

According to the BBC, Catherine Tate will be back as 'Donna' and becoming the Doctor's new companion during the fourth series. 'Martha Jones' will be back, but not until mid-way through the season (she will be appearing in three episodes of Torchwood before her return to Doctor Who).

Makes her a home." Mal

I hope those rumours are false as well. She was okay for one episode, but no more.

My vote also goes to Carey Mulligan/Sally Sparrow. I think that the actress and the character showed enough potential in one episode to be a good long term companion.

Nope - its been officially announced by the BBC.

I think that would have been the popular choice... This sounds like a decision by the Men In Suits rather than the creative team.

However, before passing judgement, remember that Carey Mulligan got to be the main protagonist in one of the best episodes so far, with a very clever plot, while Catherine Tate was assistant in a so-so camp "monster-of-the-week tries to destroy Earth while chewing the scenery" pantomime. That's gonna skew your judgement.

I agree with IMNOTHERE, the character written for "The Runaway Bride" was not the best, in a story that was not the greatest either (except for the part where the TARDIS was flying down the motorway...that was cool). By the very end of the episode 'Donna' had changed quite a bit and if her mind had actually been opened to new possibilities in her life, then hopefully the character will not be so shrill when she comes back.

I also like the fact there will NOT be the 'romantic interest' thing going on. That was starting to get really annoying the past couple seasons.

I've only seen the first 4 episodes, I have to say I like Martha Jones as The Doctor's companian, I always felt Rose was a bit airheaded. Plus Martha is alot more attractive (i.e. smokin' hot!). For a while there, I was worried that the bride was the new companion for the rest of the season, couldn't stand her at all.

How many Jaynes does it take to change a light bulb?

Two. One to try to put it in and another to find a bigger hammer.
