Hi Mai - I am dying my army boots brown for the 76th - I went to a place who would do it for around $80, or I could purchase all the materials, including leather dye for around $45 and do it myownself... which is what I did - of course they are Army boots and there is also a belt and gun holster included in the items to be dyed - it would surely cost less at a shoe repair place to either purchase the supplies or have them do it for you!

Hey, sorry i've been sulking and deliberately avoiding this thread.
As for patterns for men, you can usually get away with a tunic just made from two rectangles with a widening at the top to cover shoulders, or even a t shape, like a really big t shirt.
you could cut two rectangles, a few handspans wider than it would take to stretch from one side of him to the other around the widest part (either chest or tummy) edge all of it or the top and bottom with trim and then secure the sides so they don't come open, up to the bottom of the arm openings.
Then just tie something around the waist. You can either gather the shoulders up with drawstrings (like you were describing i think) or leave them hanging down like sleeves.
then just use a piece of fabric for a cloak. or whatever.
