That's true, they dd when I tried, it's a matter of showing them who's the boss.
If they slid away, menace them with some mispellings.

Please tell me we're not going to go down that road again... Remember, in order to get proper use of a dictionary, you must be able to comprehend the definitions.

Hey guys, months and months later I remember that I wanted to apologize to EVERYONE I have EVER bugged about the word "irony". Ya know, I finally looked that sucker up in a different dictionary than the one I usually use and now I get it. You are all correct, the damn dictionary definition does not come CLOSE to the one I learned at my (English teacher and Humanities teacher and Literature teacher)father's knobbly knee. I hope anyone I have offended will please forgive. Just for sharing purposes, what my dad emphasized was the "shot himself in the foot" aspect of irony, that the person involved in the situation being referred to as ironic is brought down by the very activities they undertook in order to prevent misfortune, activities without which the misfortune certainly would not have come to pass. As so much in life does.

Lunatikat - breathlessly awaiting illumination, or was it dimly awaiting respiration?

2 years, 4 months and 3 days since the last post in the thread? And resurrected from Troll Country?! That's what I call a lot of water under the bridge.

For what it's worth, you are forgiven as requested. Truth be told, I never hold a grudge, so I forgave you 2 years, 4 months and at least 2 days ago.

Why are you hanging out in Troll Country when you could be engaging in wacky shenanigans in any number of Imponderable, SereniTREE, et al threads in GenDis? Or if you prefer yelling, screaming and name-calling there's a full menu of threads in RealWorldDis...

[ teasing ] Stop living in the past! Posting in threads that died in February of 2005 -- 7+ months before the BDM premiered -- won't bring Book or Wash back to life! The present is a far superior place in which to live...particularly if one is a stock holder in a major oil company! [ / teasing ]

Responsively,

zoid

P.S.
Errr... SPOILER ALERT!

That was for spilling the beans about Book and Wash dying in the BDBOF, above. Sorry for being a little tardy with that warning. That was pretty much how my third child got conceived, too...

P.P.S.
Also for what it's worth, 'words' are made up of arbitrary (chosen at random) sounds and symbols. Words gain their meaning (definition) by a having sizable portion of the population agree on that same meaning, so that an idea, a mental image may be shared between communicants. Therefore, if someone wants to 'axe' me a question, it's snobbery to pretend that I don't understand that particular definition of the word 'axe', even though it's not included in any dictionary I've ever seen.

This is kinda the problem with the word 'irony': Even the dictionaries aren't terribly concrete on its definition or correct usage. People use it all the time, and mostly, incorrectly. But if we all use it incorrectly according to the dictionary and The Rules O' Th' English Language, then the users have changed the meaning of the word by majority, and perhaps it's the dictionaries and Rules that need to be changed?

This mix-up of what a word is (arbitrary sounds/symbols assigned meaning by common agreement), versus what a dictionary is (a listing of the commonly agreed upon meanings assigned to arbitrary sounds/symbols...as opposed to a Rule Book) is all very ironic, as far as I'm concerned. Wouldn't you agree?
