I'm normally not one to watch (let alone post!) schmaltzy YouTube videos. But this is one that really grabbed my eye. I'm a 10-year veteran of the US Navy, and I did tours with Naval Special Warfare in both Afghanistan and Iraq. And this video basically sums up my hope for the way that Americans see their fighting men. All we really want is for our countrymen to respect us as fellow Americans and human beings, and to appreciate our willingness to serve our country.

That always bothered me. People go into the military for all kind of reasons but most of them join up because they want to contribute to their country, and defend it. This seems to work very well for a country that doesn't have a draft system, or not yet at least. These soldiers, sailors, and airmen go out and risk their asses for you and I, and what gets me every time is I know they DON'T have to do this, but they do. What gets my blood boiling everytime is when they come back home from whatever tour of duty they signed up for they seem to get NO respect by people, or their experiences are minimized, and they are treated like they are idiots? Why is that? I come from a family of soldiers. My Grandfather served in World War 2 and the first part of Korea War. My father served in Vietnam and did 3 tours of duty. My father was a complete S.O.B. but I do to this day respect him for going out and doing his part. I know my Great Grandfather was in the service but I'm rather sketchy about the details.

Most of these people come from poor regions and whenever a war breaks out they are the first to go without a draft. This amazes me, so I do always remember all of those people who struggled, fought and died for us.

My father and an uncle served in World War II. I have friends and a brother-in-law who served in Vietnam.

My father only talked once about the war to me. After hearing what he had gone through I did not bother him again about it. It was tough just to hear it and I can only imagine what it was like to live through it.

We care. We want you back home. So take care and hurry back.
