I've been trying to access this site for the past few days and it always appears to time out, connections are very intermittent. 80% down, 20% up, is this to do with my ISP or does the site regularly go down?

Judging from the Six degrees of Firefly thread the site appears to be up when I'm getting no access.

Any thoughts? some comments on virtual firefly.net were suggesting connecting by proxy.

Jorune, welcome to the joy of your new home, fff.net.

It tends to act wonky, and tends to freeze up. It is the site itself, the code it is written in, and (I think) the server Haken has it on that all contribute to the wonkiness.

And (most of us) wouldn't have it any other way.

I was just wondering whether other people were having similar problems, they appear to access the site during the times when I couldn't.

Problems are intermittent and I've seen many of these problems myself. Especially since Haken moved the server. Around lunch and supper are the times where I get the most problems (CST).

I would certainly contradict to Mavourneen's conjecture that "(most of us) wouldn't have it any other way."

In fact, many of us have offered to help Haken optimize code, develop a new back-end, etc. I know that he has refused all my offers to help (ignored actually, I've yet to see a reply). I can't speak for anyone else though. He has also refused to accept (ignored actually) even the most simple improvements to the site.

My suggestion is to learn to accept the failings of the site. They're here to stay.

Yep. Like Serenity herself, parts occasionally fall off and/or emit smoke, but she's our home. Just wouldn't be the same without the quirks.
