When the original cover art was first released, nobody could figure out what all the things were in the background (between Zoe and Mal). The general consensus was that they were some sort of space llama (spllama?), and since then the critters have been running amok around here.

Plus, if those are supposed to be Reavers, they sure did a crappy job. Look more like a bunch of college kids at a frat party (maybe it's a photo of one of the now-infamous Raver Breeding Parties). Seriously! Llama! Look!
Also, notice how they turned Mal's Western-y pistol into a future-y automatic. Gee, we can't be having anything vageuly Western-y, now can we F
ing Universal marketing... But they can put a llama on the cover!

I don't think so. The angle of Mal's hand is all wrong for a 1911 in the first place, and in the second that gun doesn't look remotely like a 1911. I still think they just stuck in a new gun to make it more sci-fi-ish.
