Watch Wonderfalls..........Please

I am curious how many of my fellow Browncoats watched the great new show Wonderfalls (fridays at 8 central on Fox)? It is in my (and many critics) opinion the best new show on TV this year. Let's show Firefly alum Tim Minear some love by supporting his new show. It is very witty and extremely well done. And not only does it have the brilliant Tim Minear, but Jewel Staite (Kaylee) will be joining the cast a few eps down the line (assuming it gets that far). I am terribly afraid that it is going to get the ax just like Firefly did on fox fridays. I just saw the ratings for the first ep last friday, and it finished 4th in its time slot. Not a good start. Please give the show a chance. I think you will like it, and if not at least you tried.

What's the premise of the show again? I don't recall reading anywhere what the show is about.

I will watch it so long as it does not come on opposite Stargate SG1. If it does, I am afraid I will not be able to see it.

People have compared it to Joan of Arcadia, but it is not a Joan clone. The basic premise is about Jaye, an ivy league educated young misanthrope with a philosophy degree. She works at a gift shop at niagara falls. She is part of an overachieving dysfunctional family. Inanimate objects start talking to her, telling her to do things that she does not understand the meaning of. Any inanimate animal object can talk to her. A wax lion from the gift shop, a monkey from the desk of a psychiatrist that her mom sent her to, the eagle on the back of a quarter, all can talk to her. She thinks that she may be losing her mind. She follows the advice of the animal objects because they will not leave her alone until she does what they want her to do. The things that she does at the animal objects behest ultimately make other peoples lives better. Jaye is like a fish out of water when it comes to helping people so it adds a little difficulty to following the animals orders, aside from the difficulty to wrapping her mind around inanimate animals talking to her. One of the main differences between Joan of Arcadia and Wonderfalls is who is sending the messages. In Joan, it is known that God is talking to her. In Wonderfalls, Jaye does not know why or how these animals are talking to her or where the voices or orders are coming from. I have not done the show justice I'm sure. I was going to check the show out all along because Tim was involved, but the trailers that Fox had shown before the first ep did not impress me. However, after seeing the first ep, I can say the show was even better than I could have imagined. It is very funny and I can't wait to see what road the animals lead Jaye down next.

I really want to watch wonderfalls, but I work at night, have no tivo or good vcr for setting the time, and kazaa is being temperamental. I really want to watch wonderfalls though. I'm sure I'll eventually get kazaa to work.

One caveat to the production of this show that I found very interesting and quite frankly infuriating was how strongly some Fox execs were behind the show. The show originally was supposed to premiere last fall. I read an interview last week with the creator Bryan Fuller (Deep Space Nine vet and Dead Like Me creator). The interviewer asked Fuller what was up with the delay. He said apparently some of the higher ups at Fox were not happy with the show. But Fuller's immediate fox execs loved the show and they shielded him from all of the nay saying going on at the higher levels of the network. The execs that dealt directly with Fuller and Minear pretty much saved the show. My question is, where the hell were these execs when Firefly was left hanging in the wind.

Sorry but I beg to differ. The reason why it's being compared to Joan of Arcaadia is because the premises are VERY similar.

- Both shows star a young girl

- Both shows have an "otherworldly" force "talking" to the protagonist.

- In both shows, this "otherworldly" force gives the protagonist cryptic instructions which the protagonish always questions.

- In both shows, when the protagonist follows the cryptic instructions, she winds up helping people that she would not have normally have helped.

Personally neither show does much for me, probably because I doubt I fit in the demographic of the target audience.

Wonderfalls is a litte too quirky, too Ally McBeal-ish, and the humor is too Malcom in the Middle-ish. It's only been one episode. But thus far I'm not impressed.

But because it's not my cup of tea, doesn't mean it's not worth watching. I don't know about "Best new show", but it has potential.

Finally 'caught' the pilot and I have to say it IS the best new show of the year. That it is the only new show I have seen this year should not be considered [;)].

Firefly had similar support from Fox, I believe - there were people who really, really pushed for it but ultimately the higher ups didn't get it. I imagine the same story could be told for every single show that has aired on Fox friday nights since X-files started.

The thing to keep in mind when comparing it to JoA is that the shows were developed at the same time - Wonderfalls is not a 'clone'.

I saw it. It was...alright. It could have been funnier; I didn't laugh at all. I know it isn't a comedy, but I just expected it to be more humorous.
