Ditto, and you should have seen the Camel Spiders in Iraq. If you've heard any of the horror stories from guys that have been over, let me assure you: they're all true. Yes, they can get up to 24 inches across. Yes, they chase you. Yes, they can jump. They are just the nastiest things on God's green Earth. It's a miracle I didn't lose my mind. The only thing that saved me was that I was more worried about getting shot or blown up than I was about spiders.

First, they are not technically spiders, though they're arachnids. Their legs can get to be 5-6 inches long, and their bodies look very long, which would give them a total span of probably two feet. They are very scary looking. They're not venomous, so there's a relief there. Doesn't say how far they can jump, just that the claim they can jump several feet is exaggerated and/or false.
So. There you go. I'm going to pull all the covers off my bed and sit in the middle of it watching the floor and clutching my teddy bear now.

And all arachnids creep me out, personally. They don't have to be spiders. That's why it's called 'arachnophobia'

OK, I try not to post without pics but...
Fine, so the legends aren't true. So what?! That's still the biggest gorram bug I've ever seen! What are the rules of engagement when you see these crawlies comin' for you? Are you allowed to shoot 'em? Do you have to wait to be bitten first? How big a splat mark do they make on the windscreen of a Hummer? Taste like chicken?
Let's say it weighs 1 pound, and like an ant can lift 100x it's body weight... a child could be carried off by one of these! A three bug team could carry off any but the biggest trooper in full armor!
Even if they only weigh .1 pound, it's still only 30 of 'em...
I'd like to suggest sending cans of bug killer in any care packages that get sent over!
Charge the flamethrowers! No wait, then there'd be jumping burning bugs.
Arachnophobic? Me? Noooooooo.

Wonder how they compare to birdeater tarantulas, since it sounds like they go after similar prey. Although birdeaters do have venom, which makes them scarier to me, I don't know just how big they are.

I played with a Bird Eating Spider at my local pet store once. Man that thing was cool! The owner made me put on a chainmail glove and stick my hand in the cage because I wanted it. Dang thing jumped on my hand faster than S
t!
Needless to say he wouldn't sell it to a 15 year old!
The camel spiders are pretty cool. We saw one fighting with a scorpion once while I was over there. Man they are quick!

Google image search it. There an image of some soliders holding a dead one up. Positively nasty. As far as the jumping thing, they can jump high enough to climb up from wherever they land up a man's back. Once saw the biggest, burliest Marine running flat out hollering fit to beat the band. Course, everybody grabs their rifles, cause we think we're going to get attacked (again). Nope; a camel spider was chasing him. Thing jump at least high enough to climb from wherever it landed up onto his back. The urban legend bit is that they'll eat parts of you while you're asleep. Icky (but untrue) (but presented as true to newly arriving troopers).

I don't know, dude, I saw quite a few that were bigger than 6 nches. Hell, one of my chiefs (who liked the things, for some damned reason) found a gift store that sold dead ones in custom frames, and it was about 8 inches. All due respect to snopes, I saw bigger than that when I was there. Like I said, try out that Google Image search; I'm sure that photo's still around.
