Symbol of the Independent's - what's on the patch?

Anyone know what's on that triangular patch worn on the shoulder of the Independent's uniforms? They seem to wear different stuff in the flashbacks, but the triangular patch seems consistent. Anyone have a good image of it?

Yeah, those are patches... but not the patch worn by the Independents in the flashbacks. Since the battle of Serenity valley took place after or during the flashbacks, a commemorative patch wouldn't look quite right on the Browncoat uniforms. :)

Any other notions out there?

Maybe it's just a cool-looking symbol they scratched up in a few hours after uniting to fight the Alliance. The swatstika was a Indian ( both American and Asian) good luck symbol, and the Finnish Air Force Emblem, until Hitler adopted it becuase he thought it looked cooler than the Hammer and Sickle of his commie rivals.
