$35 Million Budget for Serenity

I believe that because the series was filmed in High Definition that it would not cost a great deal more to make the film if they use the same high definition cameras to film it.

The only things they may need to do is redress the existing sets, create new sets and spend a bit more time and money on the special effects to make it all cinema quality, which the series was very close to anyway.

$35 million will be enough to make a great movie. The actors are already in place, none of which are the overpaid types, and if the pilot was done for around $10 million, then the movie will be great. I am sure Joss is very aware of how important it is to come in on or under budget, and produce a quality product. Universal is watching and Joss wants Firefly to fly again, to do that he will have to make a great movie.

I do not think $100 million is an unattainable # for the movie. I think worldwide it should be able to generate that kind of money before we add in the DVD sales and rentals.

I wonder how accurate that 200,000 figure is for DVD sales, and what the original projected # was for sales.

The number of movies that reach a hundred mil in sales is actually not that high. We're talking fifteen million movie-goers, at least. Outside of England, most countries haven't seen it. The DVDs have sold about two hundred thousand copies. No more than six million people saw the series when it was on and it steadily lost viewership, due to Fox's idiotic handling. Some of those viewers who decided the show was not that compelling based on how the show was shown may not go to see it.

I am a pessimist by nature and Joss has constantly shown me the limitations of that take on life. Still, I think some caution is in order. The odds that the movie will be successful are not bad. But, enough for another series, assuming that the cast is even available? Pretty damn long. Maybe not Early-getting-saved-long, but long. I'm just happy for what we're gonna get and anything beyond that will be gravy. But, I'm not holding my breath.

If this sounds too defeatist, I'll just add that, despite what I've just said. I plan to go multiple times, dragging everybody along that I'm even slightly acquainted with, in the hopes that I'll be proved totally full of it.

Depends. Does the $100 million figure (which was posted by someone here and is in no way a confirmed expectation) include the rental and sale of DVDs and tapes? Does it include merchandise? What is the actual expectation of Joss & Universal? We are only speculating at this point.

Again, I have to question this number. Where did this # come from? How accurate can it be if the only system to monitor viewers is the Nielson box? I don't know a single family that owns one.

Yes Fox mishandled the show, and their inept management of the show is more responsible for killing the show than all other factors combined.

I ask how many fans are there out there now? Not only those of us that post on these boards, but all of them. Those we have converted? Those that have picked up the DVD set? I would go so far as to say the fanbase has doubled if all the new posters here and at the official board can be any indication.

What I think we need to do is just as you said; see the movie. We need to market the heck out of this film. Talk it up to friends and family. Take people w/ us to see it and make it a mobile viewing party. See it multiple times. Post up fliers about the movie anywhere you can think of that they might do some good.

This is our show too. Joss has busted his hump to get a movie deal, and the cast were as good as their word that they would answer Joss's call to do the movie. We owe it to them to pitch the movie to everyone and get them to go too.
