As i forced my wife to watch an episode of firefly for the first time, and of course i had to choose my favorite episode: Ariel. at the end of the episode, river is drawing/coloring and simon gives her a shot. wife asks me if river is drawing the cartoon character from Serenity- the fruity oaty bar cartoon character. at first i didn't think it was the same, it kind of looked like one of those russian dolls within a doll within a doll.. kind of toy container. but now i'm not so sure. certainly, river's memories were evoked during the entire ariel episode. just wondering if there are any comments on this?

My mom has a bunch of those dolls - I have to say they look very similar to what River was drawing, except that the drawing had sort of a more anime look to it. So, my take? Probably unrelated to the FOB characters (although it'd make for a nice little piece of continuity ).

I see the resemblance, but I have to say it's probably not from the Fruity oaty commercial, since that wasn't even conceived at the time Ariel was filmed. At least, I doubt Joss had that much foresight. He's a genius and I love his work, but to insert that kind of foreshadowing would be mind-numbing.

got another ariel inquiry:
when wash and kaylee go down to that junkyard, wash picks up a piece of mechanical junk and studies it right before he lobs it at the shuttle which ends up being their medical vehicle later. my question is: doesn't that piece of mechanical junk look very similar to the compression coil thing that breaks in out of gas?

Large and hotlinked - I'm a very bad hippie who is going to the special hell.

From www.still-flying.net - the very best source of Firefly screencaps. You should find a shot of the compression coil thingy too.

Yes, that's a catalyzer like the one they just needed in Out of Gas.

I think those are geisha dolls.

Something Inara mentions in Trash as the last big job Mal smuggled.

INARA: They were little geisha dolls with big heads that wobbled!
MAL: People love those!

A hint at River's psychic abilities.

Mal had a job planned.

Gotta say, I still think they're Russian dolls. They're certainly shaped like Russian dolls - the sort of rounded, bowling pin shape. Maybe symbolic of the many layers within River herself? And how Simon and the rest of the crew are slowly opening up more of the mystery around her?
