ST Enterprise - Why can't I get into this show ?

I've been a Trek fan since I was about 5-6 (The first episode I can remember watching was Best of Both Worlds Part 1 I was 5 and it scared the crap out of me)Star Trek got me into Sci-Fi so even I tried to stay with Enterprise. The franchise started to go down hill during the 4th/5th season of Voyager. DS9 was its peak.

With regards to Enterprise I have discussed this with some of my friends and we each come up with same answer - Its not Star Trek! The 3rd series was a vast improvement but even that didnt feel like Star Trek. I happened to catch an episode of TNG on Sky One a couple of weeks ago and a couple of days later an episode of Enterprise its hard to believe that it was the same francise. Just crap

Best bit in all of Enterprise was the warlike mirror-universe version of the title sequence.

Sorry, it won't get better. Normally I would say watch it to learn about continuity you may miss, but they screwed up the continuity. It was a space show that used the Star Trek name. There was very little in the story that was actually ST.

No character development. By the 4th season viewers should care a little about them, but I still had no feelings for Merriweather. Don't get me started with how annoying they made Hoshi.

The ends of the series was a mess.

Funny - I thought it got off to a promising start - first serious space exploration by humans, no transporter, no phasers, no tractor beams, no universal translator, no prime directive to flout and then agonize over and arrogant Vulcans who were not quite as wise as they thought they were. Oh, and the great pretext that the events in "First Contact" could have screwed up the timeline, which could have got them off the continuity hook. Half a season in, they've got all the upgrades and are back to thinking up technobabble to stop them just transporting out of danger.

Oh, Mysterious future guy who proved to be an X-files-style "we'll think of the twist when we get to it" McGuffin, when he could have turned out to be Sisko trying to transport DS9 back in time to act as a base for the war against... no, wait, that's been done.

Wonder what its like in the alternate universe where the "Andromeda" idea was made as the 4th Trek spin-off? Maybe Firefly didn't get cancelled there, and we'd be complaining how it all went down the pan with the musical/buffy crossover/animated/Neil Gaiman-written ep in Season 3.

Y'know, I actually didn't mind this show, and a couple of guys I know thought the same.

Ya, I found the story lacked direction sometimes and dragged on an on (Xindi), but I didn't mind it. The Time traveller was my least favorite part.

Now I'm not what you'd consider a huge Star Trek fan. I never watched every episode of any of the incarnations, and wasn't upset when I missed episodes. But I am a fan of Space Sci-fi.

I can understand the Trek fans complaint about continuity. I agree totally. But as someone mentioned before, if you watch it as a Space TV show loosely based on Star Trek, it's easier to watch.

I liked the characters and even the ship AND I liked the *GASP* theme song. I remember hearing some fans of Firefly saying they didn't like it's theme so...

And for the record, even as an occasional Trek fan, I don't beleive for a moment that Archer's Enterprise was the pre-cursor to the NCC-1701.

The show wasn't what anyone expected and the director/writor/producors should be ashamed BUT, I've seen worse.

I think any show set as a prequel to an established Space Sci-fi show is doomed to fail from the outset.

The continuity complaints don't bother me. If Trek has taught me anything, it's that time is fluid.

Archer's Enterprise works fine for me as a pre-Romulan War Earth ship.

During the Romulan war, heavier (i.e., better armoured) designs came into fashion, and they eventually evolved into the Constitution-class. As technology advanced, it became more "elegant," with the plating, conduits, handles, and everything covered up by moire-patterned covers (as seen in TOS).

Robert April's Enterprise (which was eventually passed to Christopher Pike before reaching James Kirk) remains the first Federation starship to bear the name. The Federation didn't exist until after the NX-01 was decommissioned.

Centuries later, the NX-01 design would be revisited and updated into the 24th century's Akira and Norway classes.

As for the Xindi, well, I've never believed that we've seen every kind of alien in the Trek 'verse (read the novels; there're hundreds of species mentioned that have never appeared on screen). The Xindi must've just been hanging around off-camera during the "previous" series.

The Vulcan/Andorian animosity has been around since TOS, and the "Ferengi" were never actually named in Enterprise. They were just another random alien crew that Enterprise encountered. The word "Ferengi" wouldn't be known to humans until the Stargazer's first contact at Maxia Zeta. It's only after that that someone could look at Archer's mission logs and recognize "Oh, hey. Those big-eared aliens Archer encountered must've been some of these Ferengi."

I've never heard it explained that way before and I have to say... I like it.
