Unfortunately, there are a lot of very cool videos with no disclaimers. That makes them easy targets.
I must point out again that they haven't gone after any of The X-Files fanvids/ Bloopers.
Interesting....

Interesting....
That's because X-Files , although it was
" subversive " , was viewed by the average watcher as just another paranoid ,
sci-fi/fantasy program . It had it's great points , and was often fun to watch , but a lot of folk just wouldn't consider it 'real' .
So X-Files = subversive , but 'unreal'...
On the other hand , Firefly , although subversive and a somewhat down-and-dirty vision of the future , is held by its viewership to be more plausible , and therefore , "more real" .
The individualist and libertarian aspects are what make it too subversive for the Alliances and Blue Suns of our little world , and the future that is planned for delivery to all of us...
Real , everyday folk IN SPACE , making their own way ? Can't be ALLOWED to happen...Too much freedom...Gotta smash the dreams of the common folk . " Don't want 'em to have firearms , and definitely not those dangerous Space Ships ! Someone could be Killed ! "
And that THEME SONG ! " Can't take the sky from me ! "
" That Joss Whedon is a bomb-throwing
rabble-rouser who must be stopped at any cost ! "

Don't most of the videos say in like really big letters that they were made for fun, and they give credit to Fox, universal, etc.? The shouldn't they not count that as copyright infringement?
This just doesn't make sense to me. In the same way that it didn't make sense to me when they shut down bluesunshirts.com. If they're not doing anything with this great idea that they threw away, then what's the point in keeping others from supporting it??

Unfortunately giving credit does not stop copyright infringement from being copyright infringement. You need to explicitly get permission from the copyright holders to use their copyrighted material.
That said, I see no reason whatsoever why they should be going after people who post videos on YouTube. If anything it just gives them more advertisement and word of mouth. It doesn't make sense to me at all.

Fanvids are free promotion ...a way to get their product out and in to even more hands.
How many people would never have heard of Firefly if it wasn't for some fan with a vid on their myspace page?
Removing the vids.....
