Ok I have a theory on BSG.

Here it is....

First off somewhere down the line in the series Adama has to fly a Viper for some reason and is given the callsign Zeus.

Now....

They find Earth, but they find it several thousand years in the past. Now by this time they have either lost/made peace with or done something with the Cylons so they are no longer a threat.
So they find Earth in its pre Roman state and decide to make a life on Earth but not to bring all their technology down with them.
Of course they influence the primitives with their knowledge of medicines and so forth.
And that how we modernites have the gods....Zeus, Apollo, Athene, Hera and so forth, as well as the constillations Capricorn, Sagitarius and so forth.

Anyway just a theory :)

Or by Akums Razor (a.k.a. how it's stated in the show), since the 13th tribe would have had access to the same religious documents that they do on the show, that's where all the names came from.

This is, of course, assuming that the earth that is found in the show is our earth.

Nice Hitchhiker's reference. Concerning the original post, wasn't the Admiral's callsign "Cornhusker" or something like that? I watched the miniseries not too long ago, and for some reason that sticks in my memory. Oh well...you zarquon froods.

I've been thinking along the lines that when they get to Earth it will be several thousand years in the past as well. However, another thought I've had is that they are the thirteen tribe and that all this history is in fact prophesy. Either way some how they crash land on Earth and their superior technology has viewed viewed as gods by whoever is there and they are thusly the foundation of what we now view as greco-roman mythology.

...and yes, Adama is Zeus.

"Husker," IIRC. Which could refer more to his voice than any perceived farmishness (he's career military, and his father was a lawyer, so no clue where "cornhusker" would come from).

It's actually "Husher" which, although much less flamboyant than other callsigns, has a vaguely omninous tone to it.

Actually, when they're in the tomb of Athena at the mid-point of season 2, they see the constellations and Roslyn says the current symbols for the 12 colonies are based on the ancient constellations: Sagitaron, Sagitarius. Gemenon, Gemeni. Caprica, Capricorn. (And so forth.) So if the old names for them are the contemporary names for us, it seems pretty clear that it's set in the future.

Also, Zeus is not Adama's callsign. That's just how Zarek refers to Commander Adama when he's talking to Lee (whose callsign, Apollo, is the son of Zeus).
