The movie is a thinly veiled allegory to slavery. De-humanizing the slave allows the master to control or dispose of 'it' as the master wishes.

Deckard is as much a 'slave' to the system as any of the replicants. He serves his masters, and is gifted by them with the illusion of a 'life', a photographically captured past and the illusion of a meaningful future.

To reprise Gaff's comment: It's too bad he won't live, but then again, who does?

We're all 'replicants', working for the benefit of some dimly perceived master (usually, they're called 'shareholders')... Just not in the same sense as Roy, Priss, Leon, Zhora, Rachael and Rick Deckard were actually replicants.

Yeah, I'd definitely comment out the hardwired address translations in the hosts file, pretty sure Haken has a block of IPs that he can potentially move servers around if he sees the need to. If he does that, you might accidentally bring up some of his other projects instead of fff.net one day...

Okay, now I can see where you were going with the remark. And you have a valid point where Roy, Priss, Leon and Zhora are concerned.

I'll confess. I was so reinvigorated by our little exchange last night that I rewatched th DC of Blade Runner. Upon reviewing it, my conclusion that Deckard is a replicant was only confirmed. For while your point of the off-world N-6's is valid, remember that Tyrell said Rachael was different, because of the memory implant...

For me, the telling "obsession" is the photographs. Leon left his in the hotel room ("Hotel Untervasser" = Underwater). Rachael presents a handful of photos to Deckard as proof she's "real". Deckard has a piano top full of photos.

Speaking of Rick's piano: He plays. Rachael plays, although she is unsure whether her memories of lessons were implanted or not ("You play beautifully," Deckard replies). It's like standard programming practice. Perhaps, as part of the break-in process for a new Tyrell-designed brain, they put it through the paces of learning the piano (since music ultimately boils down to mathematical relationships)...

And of course the big 'tell': All the replicants -- to include the owl -- have eyes that 'shine' like a dog's. In particular, in the scene in Deckard's kitchen in which Rachael asks if Rick will hunt her down ("No. I owe you one."), her eyes 'shine' as she stares straight ahead. In the background, out-of-focus, we see Deckard's 'eye-shine', too.

Of course, it should be pointed out that the movie and the original P.K.Dick novella bear very little resemblance to one another. I don't think Dick's Deckard was a replicant, for what that's worth. In "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep", Deckard is like a particularly flat-footed Gestapo sergeant who hunts down timid Jews in hiding (the replicants). It was really an entirely different story, much more bleak and devoid of hope.
(NB: Although I did like Deckard's pet android sheep that he kept on his rooftop. Kinda like a penance for humanity crashing the global ecosystem.)

IMO Zoid, this is the strongest part of your argument, and something I noticed the first time I saw it back in '82. I take it as possible mis-direction, since the 'shine' is never referred to as being a replicant trait (why do Voit-Kamph? Just shine a flashlight in thier eyes), or it could be a wink at the audience to say "Look, they really aren't so different, heh heh".

In the end, I enjoy the ambiguity. Maybe he is one, maybe not. But everyone in the movie is human(as Kirk might say), in any case, and that's what it's all about for me.

Thank you, too, Chris. Like I said, after 6 months on the Dallas Cowboys Forums, intelligent discourse is a welcome breath of fresh air.

It was good to engage in a friendly discussion of my favorite sci-fi movie (with apologies to "Serenity"; but coming second only to "Blade Runner" and Ridley Scott is anything but faint praise, from me). On the other hand, there's no doubt in my mind that Firefly was the best series ever aired on TV -- foreign or domestic -- and that the Serenity pre/sequel would be at least as illustrious as the first movie (presuming we can beat the astronomical odds, once more).
