Satisfied that no one was following them, Safe stood and stretched. “I gonna grab some shut-eye. I spell you at the controls in about two hours, and then Jack and Soul. If you need me before then, just holler.”

Exiting the cockpit, Safe enters the med-lab.

Seryn sits silently watching her newborn as Safe approaches, not fully trusting herself to look up.

“Have you decided on a name yet?” Safe asks tickling the baby’s foot. The intelligence and alertness behind the eyes of the newborn Safe found a little disconcerting.

“ummm… not… well, not quite yet.” Seryn says softly, still not making eye contact.

“I’ve always liked the name Kurt…” Safe let the sentence trail off as ghosts from the past briefly haunted him. “I’m sure you’ll find a name that fits. He’ll do just fine.”

Seryn finally meets Safe eyes, “How do you know? How can you be so sure??”

“I know his mom.” Safe smiles and squeezes Seryns shoulder.

Walking over to the other bed, Safe drops onto it. He crosses his feet, pulls his hat down over his eyes and folds his hands behind his head.

"He'd lost a lot of blood, we didn't think he was going to make it" Versa told the story.

Milton listened intently to her from across the small table, occasionally stealing moments to look at Amy who sat beside him.

"So I, well its a bit complicated, but basically I came up with the idea of using one of the sonic mines to slow down his deterioration."

"You could do that?" Milton was astonished

"Well, thats the thing. We weren't sure, but we were out of options. I guess you could say we were successful, I mean he's here now..."

"I can feel a but", Milton said

Amy looked down to the space between them, checking out her own backside. "It's not mine"

Milton looked at her confused, until he finally got the joke and a small smile appeared on his face.

Versa rolled her eyes and glared at Amy. "Have you finished?"

Amy's face dropped and then, when Milton wasn't looking, pulled a face at her friend

"As I was saying, it seemed ok, but..." She paused, making sure Amy wasn't going to slip in with another joke. "I think, no, I know, the experience changed him."

"How?"

"It was as if his body had, for want of a better word, mutated. Not disfigured or anything, but that it had been altered somehow by the effects of the mine. Not long after, as the crew were attempting to escape, he was able to take out numerous soldier and... well it appeared as if his body had become indestructable. Or at least, was able to withstand remarkable injuries, and recover in no time."

"You mean... Kyra's gunshot. I heard he... he survived her shooting him, when he couldn't possibly."

"The thing is," Amy butted in, "That's not even half the story. There's so much that has happened to Needy that we can't explain, that he can't explain. For a time he stayed on a vessel known as the SereniTree. Only when he arrived, people say he had already been there months before. There was footage of him having been on the ship, though he claims he had never previously set foot on the ship before. I don't really know what came of that. Its almost as mysterious with how the crew arrived here."

"What do you mean?" Milton asked, apparently getting more and more confused.

"Don't confuse him with more details" Versa told her

"No, I wanna know" Milton encouraged her

"Well, we weren't here, but apparently, none of the crew really know how they arrived together. It was as if the gods had grabbed them all and spat them out at the other side of the 'verse. They don't really seem to remember."

"Okaaaay" Milton responded uneasily.

"That's beside the point though," Versa jumped in again "its ancient history." Then addressing Milton directly "What can you tell us? About Needy, and his girl. About his life."

Milton looked at her, then at Amy, willing things to slow down. "Wait, hold on a second, I thought you said there was more to it. What happened to Needy. What's wrong with him?"

Versa remained silent. Perhaps she had said too much. So Amy enlightened him instead

"Well, the way I hear it, is after what happened to him, he had some sort of religious epiphany."

Milton scrunched his face, it didn't sound much like the Needy he knew. He never had been very religious.

"He started talking about fate and destiny... and something about an angel."

"An angel?" Milton really couldn't believe what he was hearing now. Were they talking about the same guy he knew?

"Yeah, apparently. He believed an angel was leading him to his destiny... or something." Amy shrugged

"Wait, how do you know all this?"

Versa leaned in and whispered "I think most of it is down to what he said to some of them on a drunken night when they first arrived here."

Milton sat back.

"Well you know what they say, a drunk man is an honest man" Amy said

"No they don't" Versa replied

"Alright, alright" Milton stopped them from arguing. "I think, maybe... well I don't know." He wanted to say it all sounded crazy, but he didn't want to offend Amy. "I guess anything is possible right"

"Right." Amy said, concealing a smile as she stared at

A beacon called out in the vastness of space.

S.O.S.

A ship, dead in the water

A small private vessel meant for holding less than a dozen souls.
The vessel was named Dwarf, but it's original name had been lost for generations

It's occupants were innocent, now trapped in a ship that had no longer had means to fly.
It was a miracle Reavers had not yet found them and raped and pillaged everything inside.
Though, if they had, they would have discovered much more than they could have ever imagined in their murderous minds.
A dark secret
A weapon that could destroy the alliance.

But they had not been found.

No, not yet.

But necessities were sparse - food, oxygen - and so the message beeped.

S.O.S.

Someone surely would find them.
Would provide assistance

Someone smart.
And hopefully someone who despised the alliance as much as the occupants of the ship did.

A yellow blip Jumped onto Wisp's display on the upper left hand corner. It wasnt a Friend or a foe and they werent gonna run across it so really it was just useless information. If Wisp had been doing something he would have just ignored it but as all he was doing was counting the stars he decided to throw out a scan.

Pressing a few buttons the map zoomed into the yellow blip and a rough EM image popped up with statistical details beside it. The vessel was only small but something was wrong on the details. Speed was reading N/A. No vessel should be a drift at this distance from everywhere.

"Thats odd..." Wisp mumbled to himself " I wonder" pressing a few more buttons he did a diagnostic on incoming signals and sure enough burried in a low Wavelength signal was an SOS signal. The band was much lower than would have usally been picked out.

The message was garbled but the SOS digital code came through clear.

"Why The hell is that burried so far down??" As Wisp spoke SR appeared over his shoulder.

"Thats an independance frequency whos broadcasting on that??" He said in a ponderous tone. "Hit a signal back to them same carrier wave see whats shaking"

Ghost wandered around aimlessly. She wasn't scared anymore, the loud noises and shaking had stopped. She wasn't scared cause she was an explorer. Explorers had lots of fun.

Hearing a strange noise, she tiptoed into another room and got closer to inspect what was making it. There were no adults around that she could see, exploring was safer when there were no adults around.

A small thing was laying wrapped in a blanket. It looked like a kid, but she had never seen a kid that small before. She wondered where it came from.

"Hi" she said quietly slowly reaching a hand out to touch the mysterious thing.

In another part of the ship Shadow stood watching Safe and Wisp, from the doorway, as they piloted. If she stayed near the door she could hide if the adults noticed her, but the lights and switches were alluring to the young girl. Seeing the adults were distracted she snuck in silently peering curiously at the lights and switches, her gaze flickering between them, the adults, and the view outside.

In two other parts of the ship, two pairs of eyes opened slowly. *Why am I laying here?* the owners' of the eyes thought unknowingly echoing each other as they slowly regained consiousness.

OOC: Intriguing stuff! Can't wait for the next part Aprilise.

---

Aboard the sleeping vessel, a scruffy looking woman slept in the pilot's chair. Her dark dishevelled hair was short in length, and apparently needed a good wash. Her lip twitched as she dreamt about what to say to her no good parents-long gone but still remembered. The femlae pilot was in her late twenties, though her worn out appearance made her look a decade older at least.

Beep.

A yellow light flickered on the dash board.

Beep beep.

A slight smile appeared on the pilot's face. Her name was Maxine, and right now she was dreaming of telling her lousy parents where to shove their expectations.

Beep beep beep.

The beacon alert would beep once. Then twice. Three times. Finally four times. After that, it would reset to one beep. Normally the one beep would be enough to make the pilot aware of an incoming hail. But this pilot was tired. And right now, the only pleasure in life she got was in her dreams.

Beep beep beep beep.

Maxine's eyelids fluttered, and she began to stir.

Yawning she opened one eye

"Did I hear something?" she pondered, before deciding that she must have just been dreaming.
Then, she was proven wrong.

Beep.

She sat up straight, removing her feet from the dashboard and setting them on the floor

Beep beep.

A signal.

"We're being hailed!" she realised. "Help. It's gotta be"

Maxine punched a few keys in front of her, which brought up the diagnostic.

A cargo ship, large enough to hold a dozen or so people, and it was heading for them.

Finally, help had arrived... hopefully

Maxine got to her feet and, without even responding to the message, ran to the doorway.

The ship was quiet, but not for long. Undoubtedly, the rest of the crew had also took this chance to get some sleep - what little they could at least - but now was not the time. Help had arrived. Or at the very least, visitors had.

Maxine pressed hard on the large red pad situated near the door causing a loud alarm to sound throughout the ship.

Not staying still for one second, the frazzled female ran for the quarters, in particular the shared room that belonged to Liam and his wife.

Before she had the chance to intrude, Liam had opened the door and met the pilot halfway.

"What is it?" he asked, his voice husky.

"We've been hailed. Cargo ship, real close" Maxine rattled off quickly

"Alliance?" he asked

"Don't think so. I'd say they were independents"

"How can you be sure?"

"Hey." She paused and gave him a stare. "It's me"

"Yeah, okay". Liam should have known better than to question the instincts of his pilot. She'd not been wrong yet.

"Still... it wouldn't hurt us to take precautions" She added

"Right. I'll take care of it."

Liam got to work whilst his wife got changed and Maxine headed back to the bridge.

They had all made sacrifices to get to where they were. To get the job done. They couldn't risk it all being for nought. Whether the other ship was friendly or not was beside the point. There are always loose cannons, and this mission was too important to screw up.

Maxine reached her station and typed a message back - evidently both the audio and visual transmitters were not working as well as they could.

"OUT OF GAS. REQUIRE ASSISTANCE"

Liam reached the room at the end of the corridor, and rushed in.
In front of him was the greatest weapon they had.
Finally, a chance to defeat the alliance.
It couldn't fall into the wrong hands
It needed to be hid.

---

OOC:
Ok, so I've got the ball rolling for now, see what you can do with it. I know what the weapon is, which I'll keep back for now, but nows the chance to have the crew's meet.
The ship is friendly. A private vessel, actually one mainly occupied by a family - Liam being the father. Maxine is a hired pilot though. Among the other crew are three women, Liam's wife, as well as a mature and worldly-wise 17yr old, and a 3 yr old (possibly belonging to the same family)
The rest I haven't dec

OOC: It seems we're having a bit of a dry spell... so I'll try and shake things up a little

"Tah mah de" Versa uttered, the strong words taking Milton by surprise.
Perhaps he hadn't painted the best picture of Kyra, in his recounting of the story between her and Needy. But he had simply stated the facts as best he could.

Needy was a good guy.
He did what he could to make people's lives easier. Crazily enough, for the most part, he put them ahead of himself. Didn't ask for much.
So when a woman entered his life, one that seemed to be the one he'd been searching for since he was a young boy, well he felt he'd hit the jackpot.
She didn't frown upon his work, like his family and friends back home had; she didn't try to change him, like the wives of those same friends, no she seemed to accept him as he was.
He fell in love with her. Absolutely.
He wanted to start a fresh. He got her to call him Bernie, a name he hadn't gone by since he was a child.
He would have given up his job for her, hell he would have given his life for her.
Then the truth came out.
He found out it had been a lie.
That the woman he called Grace was actually a reporter named Kyra, and that she had been gone to him for the sole purpose of gathering information on him and his clientele. An expose on the life of a companion.
She wasn't interested in him, only in what she could get out of him, to boost her own career.

Versa turned back to look in the direction of the girl in question, who remained now in Needy's caring arms.
"What a bitch"

But there was more to the story that Milton hadn't revealed.
Kyra had apparently fallen for Needy. She never wanted to do the story to begin with, it was a cold and heartless assignment. But she had to. For the sake of her own job, she had to do this one thing. Only, the more she got to know him, the harder it became to tell him the truth. Until it all fell apart.
She didn't turn in the story. She couldn't. But it was printed nevertheless. Her boss thought he was doing the right thing, and maybe he was, for her sake. But not for his, not for Needy's.
It almost cost him his license.
The report never included his name, but the list of clients that did get out lead to him.
He played it lowkey for a while, and he never talked to Kyra again. At least, not until after she put a bullet in his head.

"No, listen..." Milton started, trying to balance the story out a bit. "She never wanted it to happen. It just got out of hand I guess. Out of her control"

Milton had never stuck up for Kyra before. Back on Boros, whenever the subject of her came up, he would always be the first to tear her down.
Now, it seemed that he was the only one that could stick up for her. To tell her side of the story, other than the woman herself. But after what he'd told Versa and Amy, he doubted they would listen to her tell her own version of events.

Milton carried on, trying to defend her, but he was for the most part only guessing. "Supposing" what Kyra must have felt.
And it didn't seem to be working.
Versa's eyes seemed to indicate nothing but contempt for the woman that had recently taken up space on their ship.
Amy's face was softer, perhaps feeling sorry for the reporter... or maybe she was just putting it on for Milton's face, who now was trying to make amends for all the things he had ever said about her.
"If Needy can forgive her, perhaps I should give her the benefit of the doubt"

"Look sharp folks" Safe said, walking onto the scene.

The three of them turned their heads to face him.

"Wisp's picked up a distress signal. There's a dead duck out there, we're gonna see if we can lend some assistance."

"Independents?" Amy asked, almost hopeful.

"Not sure yet. Seems that way. Still, don't want any surprises, so I'm telling you like just as I told the others, look sharp"

Milton looked at Amy and Versa who seemed to be taking it all in. "Look sharp? You want us to dress up?"

Versa sniggered a little, breaking the pensive look she had displayed o

On the Dwarf, Liam shut the door to the storage closet and padlocked it. The weapon will be safe in there. So long as these rescuers aren't the nosy type.

In another room, Linda stared into the eyes of her doll. The blonde naked figurine was worn and scratched, but Linda loved it nevertheless. It was the only one she had ever seen, let alone owned. She treasured it and carried it with her wherever she went. She was never alone as long as she held onto it tight. And Linda had a mighty fine grip for a three year old.

"Hey girl" a voice called from the doorway.
Walking into the room, Julie hugged Linda and lifted her onto the bed.
Julie was an attractive seventeen year old with chestnut coloured hair, but unlike most girls her own age, she was responsible and mature beyond her years. And even though many men had said she was beautiful, she never thought anything of it. She only cared about one thing.
Taking care of Linda.

"I'm here now. We're just going to wait until father says it's ok. Wait until we know its safe."

Julie held Linda in her arms

"Julie. Are other children coming?" Linda asked innocently.

"Maybe baby, maybe. We'll just wait and see."

--

Soul stood by the airlock waiting for the "all clear" from Wisp.
Beside him stood Safe loyally.

"What you thinking?" Safe asked.

"I'm... hoping, that this is gonna be worth our trouble. After what we've been through, we really don't need any more surprises."

--

Liam walked past his room as he headed for the docking bay. The visitors would soon be ready to come on board, if they weren't already.

"Hey" his wife called, coming out of their room.

"Hey, what you doing?" he asked concerned

"I'm coming to meet the people that are giving us a helping hand" she replied

"It might not be safe"

"Now, if it wasn't safe, you wouldn't be opening the door to them, ain't that right?"

Liam couldn't help but smile. She was right on the money. Still, it was in his nature to be protective. He also knew though, that he couldn't talk her out of it, unless danger was apparent... and even then, his arguments might not be effective.
She was a strong woman, and had been through a lot in her time.

"C'mon" she said, walking by him and leading the way.

Yep. Ciaran was a strong woman.

Ooc - hey, sorry i've been gone a while - i liked all the posts Needy! The good news is this post will bring me back into the general action - not back up to full strength by any means, and toting a baby - so don't have me leaping over tables or getting into firefights just yet, but I'm Back!.

Seryn examined all of the little tiny bits of clothing laid out on the bench - little brightly coloured frivilous romper suits bought in happier times - it had all seemed like such a good idea, to 're-activate' the pregnancy, have the tot while she was in a stable place. Ah well, best laid plans...

Selecting the stuff she needed, plus extra stuff to cater to her paranoia she stowed the rest of her belongings - her swords and pistols, the cross bow she'd stolen from the Tree's armoury, her nicer clothes and other bits of frippery in a locker. Getting dressed she did a small victory dance after fitting into her favorite pants again - ok so there was flab, but that would go soon enough surely - wouldn't it? But there they were - all supple, worn in and comfy as hell.

She picked up the significantly lighter bag - the technology that let her fit huge amounts of stuff into what looked like a medium sized satchel was great - but the wieght, although not real full weight was still considerable when everything was in it.

For now she was just gald all of the babies stuff fitted in and she didn't look like the supply wagon for an entire army.

Back in the medical bay she paused - she'd left him sleeping, but apparently now he was wide awake and at home to visitors. Little Ghost stood on tip toe, staring down into the crib Sykes had mocked up while he played with his finger and blew bubbles. Ah the cute show - at least he was capable of it. Ghost turned and her smile turned to a nervous frown. Until Seryn smiled, and came over to stand beside her. "Do you want to hold him?" Ghost looked slightly awed but more worried, and she laughed. "Ok then, don't worry - i still think i'm going to break him!"

"What is he called?"
"Well, funny you ask cause i only just decided - his name is Fin - i think you're the first person to know that!"
Ghost smiled, and started to play with Fins toes, before helping Seryn to dress him - commenting a lot on how much he wriggled and how piglets must be easier to dress. Seryn laughed, and after placing Fin in a sling style carrier accross her chest she led the way to the main room.

Where everything was in a lot more of a commotion than she expected - she caught snatches of conversation enough to know that they'd come accross a ship dead in the water, but not what was happening - she saw Soul and Safe by the airlock but the warm little lump in front of her wriggled and she realised she had no desire to be in the thick of whatever it was, so crossing through the room she walked into the cockpit and grinned as soon as they noticed her presence.

"So I go away for a day or so and all hell breaks loose - whatever will I do with you?"

Isn't sanity really a one trick pony, anyway? I mean all you get is one trick, rational thinking! But when you're good and crazy...ooh hoo hoo hoo... the skys the limit!

"So you named your progeny 'Hell'?" Asked SR from where he leaned the back corner of the cockpit next to the door. Seryn having just walked past him gave a start and the baby giggled.
