I sat and thought about it for a minute, trying to think of some obscure director to prove my movie-watching chops, but, in the end, I have to say:
Spielberg
The films that guy has made stand as landmarks on the American, nay, the world landscape. Most importantly, as with my beloved Joss, he's a great storyteller. I love David Lynch films, but while they are artistic and fascinating, they are not very good stories. Spielberg, and Joss, tell great stories. Even the bad ones are enjoyable.

best director of all time has to be frank darabont for two reasons the shawshank redemption and the green mile, next director would be steven spielberg and then it would be joss cause he can make anything funny and interesting, but these are just my favs

Gotta say James Cameron. Terminator 1 & 2,Aliens and The Abyss. Titanic was good in its way I guess. Looking forward to Avatar when Cameron is back with Weaver.
