I was just wondering who everyone thought was the best director of all time or at least the top few. I'm sure that there will be much debate but I think it is between:

Hitchcock
Scorsese
Spielberg

anyway those are the ones I thought of what do you guys think? I guess I should mention that mine were limited to American directors since I really haven't seen enough foreign directors to decide.

I would put Joss there as well but since he's only directed one film (even though it is one of my favorites) I'll leave him off the best for now. Of course he is one of my favorites though.

Akira Kurosawa.

He's the full package. Lushly beautifull camera work, perfect pacing, and fine attention to character.

Quentin Tarantino had it...not so much a fan of anything post-Jackie Brown. Sin City was entertaining though, although that was mostly Robert Rodriguez.

Christopher Nolan...sure he hasn't been around that long, but one word...Memento. One of my favorites. Batman Begins was good too.

I second the previous mentions also. I'm hoping Scorsese will finally get his Oscar for The Departed. *crosses fingers and prepares to curse the Academy...again*

FF Coppola also has directed three of my favorite movies, Godfather I and II and Apocalypse Now. Is he only making wine now? I guess a quick glance at IMDB shows he's mostly a producer now.

I also should mention the Wachowski Brothers (or is it Siblings now?). Say what you will about the second and third installments of the Matrix, I loved the trilogy. V for Vendetta was a great adaptation of the graphic novel as well, especially considering other "comic book movies" of late.

I'd like to nominate Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Check out his films Delicatessen, City Of Lost Children and Amelie for not only his visual flair, story-telling, mood creation and the perfomances he gets out of his actors, but also for his writing skill. And for pure visuals, mood etc, take a look at Alien Resurrection. The dude's a genius, simple as that.

And then it's a toss up between Cameron and Hitchcock for my last place. Cameron for all his lush epics, and Hitchcock for the dramas.

These are my favorites, not the best, because who am I to Judge who is the best.
Mr. Whedon would of made this list but as with Mr. Lucas there contributions to film and television go so much further than just director they can't be pigeon holed to just director. Perhaps Visionarys.
