At Wisps announcement Seryn grunted. She'd decided that words were just too much like making an effort, and at the moment, all of that was concentrated elsewhere.

Syke's returned to her side, a cool cloth covering the large lump on his forehead.
She managed to throw him a small glance of apology before another contraction seized her and he rushed back, careless of his own safety around her feet, to check on her.
"Ok I think its happening... Now you have to do everything exactly as I say! Can you do that?"

She swore at him, at length, and he grinned and got to work.

Isn't sanity really a one trick pony, anyway? I mean all you get is one trick, rational thinking! But when you're good and crazy...ooh hoo hoo hoo... the skys the limit!

Standing over in her tub of dirt, Rosie's face twists in distaste.

"A stump is a tree that has been chopped down. Of course it is stupid. It's dead. You might as well say, 'As dumb as a thoroughly dismembered human,' but that would be just as lacking in tact."

Flechette offers Rosie a wry smile, “That’s a fair comparison, plant girl.”

Jack adopts a pained expression. “Hey!! I resemble that remark.”

“Jack! Focus!” Safe snaps, and then looks at SR and Soul. “Ready?”

SR’s only answer is the sharp retort of his gun as three bullets strike the pursuing crafts canopy within centimeters of each other. As powerful as SR’s rifle is, the gunship’s armor proves to be stronger, if only marginally. The bullets spiderweb the glass but fail to penetrate. “If nothing else, at least their visibility is reduced.”

Soul takes his time before lofting an arrow airborne.

“You missed.” SR says, never lift his eye from his rifle scope.

“Meant to…” Soul says calmly. Soul’s arrow soars over the gunship and detonates.

The combination of the explosion and the reduced visibility forced the gunship down close to the water.

“Now!” Safe says as he and Jack lean into the canisters pushing them into the water. True to Jacks plan the canisters submerge briefly before popping back to the surface of the river. Safe slaps the close button and SR pops of a few parting shots as the rear hatch slowly closes.

As the gunship passes over the bobbing canisters, Citizen grins and presses the remote detonator button. The resulting explosion from the canisters rocks the gunship, littering it with flak, and it careens to the side slamming into the river bank.

Safe hits the com button, “Wisp, get us out of here. I don’t know about you, but I’ve had quite enough of this gorram planet.”

"Mice!"

Clayton snapped out of his daydream and looked up at his boss, trying to work out the meaning behind this seemingly random comment

"Sorry sir?"

"Its these damn mice", Carl Perry explained "I swear, you'd think we were in a cheap motel room"

Clayton looked at the piece of paper his editor held in his hand. True enough, there were bite marks in the file extract, no doubt caused by the rodents in question.

"Maybe if you filed it away..." Clayton started to suggest, before realising he'd perhaps stepped over the line.

Carl looked up at him over his glasses.
"Excuse me?"

"Sorry... nothing." Clayton backtracked.

"And since when do you have to be sorry over nothing?"

Clayton tried to think of a suitable reply, before Carl continued

"Oh, you mean since the reason I've got so many files on my desk is because you've so many unfinished stories sitting on your own. And the only ones I do get are unprintable tabloid fodder. Aliens, ghosts and government conspiracies..."

"Yeah, that reminds me boss."

Carl sighed. "What is it now?"

"There's a story I'd like to..."

"Look, you can stop right there, cos I don't need to hear you talking about another wacko story you want to check into."

"Boss..."

"The answer is no. I mean, what the hell are you doing checking into other stories. I figured you'd be out there looking for Kyra. I mean she packs up and leaves you without a word, and you wanna track down some urban legend instead"

"No. It's not like that."

"Then what is it like then" Carl uttered, exasperated.

"It's about Kyra... kinda."

"Kinda?"

"Its what she was working on, and it should give us a clue as to where she is now"

Carl thought for a moment. Something smelt wrong.
"That the truth?"

Clayton nodded. It really wasn't, well not unless you go through the six degrees of seperation, but it was connected someway.

Carl breathed a long sigh.
"What is it you need?"

OOC: That's some mighty exciting writing there. Seriously, great stuff (only just got round to reading it properly - which is why my last post didn't have anything to do with that story)

Minutes Earlier:

Needy had returned to his seat after checking on his headstrong friend, who had just gone into labour
Kyra looked at him for a minute, studying him with her eyes.
He was the same guy. His concern for his friend... it was genuine, he really wanted to help, as always.
Bernie seemed to have a penchant for helping women in trouble, though usually the women he offers to help can handle themselves. Still, she admired his altruism. Too few people out there would show the same selflessness.
It was what Kyra loved most about him, and sadly, it was the very same thing she had used against him.
She was ready, she was ready to tell him she was sorry. Beg him for forgiveness. To ask that he please would just talk to her, no, merely acknowledge her presence would be enough.
The thing was, it wouldn't be. She needed forgiveness, absolutely. She needed him to be able to talk to her, to open his arms to her again, to confide in her.
But she knew this was just a mere wish. No, no mere wish. This was something huge. As great and forgiving a guy Bernie was, could he really forgive her?
Whatever the answer, she needed to try.
But her legs would not move.
Her voice felt as if it had been silenced.
Was it normal to be paralysed with fear this way? Or was it not meant to be?
"Mind over matter" Kyra told herself "You can do this. Just get up there, and tell him how you feel. Tell him you're sorry. You need to. You can do this. You can do this"
But she couldn't.
Or rather, she was beaten to it.

"I'll be right back" Milton muttered to her, before quickly standing up and walking over to Needy. Evidently he too had been thinking about doing the same thing.

Milton seemed to be talking to Bernie for ages. Or maybe it just felt longer because Kyra felt that it was her turn next, it was inevitable. Her legs began to shake and her heart pounded in her chest. Then, her stomach became queasy and she felt the need to throw up.
It was all in her head though. The nerves were finally getting to her.

Then, something she didn't think would happen did. As Milton was walking away he was called back.

Quote:

"It's alright." Needy consoled, "You did what you thought was best, with the information you had. You couldn't have known."

As if by a miracle, Kyra's spirit was calmed. Her heart no longer pounded violently, and her legs stopped shaking.
Her stomach felt ill at ease still, but then it changed and started to feel warm, and as that warmth rose up towards her chest, she realised it was no longer fear that she felt, but love. Never before had she felt love in her heart so literally. In fact, had she been the cynical type, she might have just thrown up there and then at thinking such a thing.

Before long, Milton had returned and sat down beside her, only he was not alone.

As Bernie stood over her, those feelings she had just conquered came rushing back to her.
There was no turning back now. The moment was upon her.
There was nobody to lean on now, Milton had left, and the seat was now occupied by him

How could there be a guy like him? Who could be so big as to come up to me? After what I've done?
Kyra's love welled up in her heart once more, rising up even further until it pushed out some tears from her eyes.
She tried to cover them but realised it would be of no use. Soon, she wouldn't be able to hild them back

"Hey" he whispered softly, then after a lifetime seemed to have passed "Are you okay?"

His voice reminded her of her father, back when times were really good. When he would tuck her into bed and read her a story. Or later on in life, when she was in her teens crying over yet another bad boyfriend, he was there for her, proving to be a listening ear and a shoulder to cry on. Her protector. When she was a girl, her father was the love of her life, the one person she could rely on and turn to.
Now he was gone, Bernie was the only one who ever came close to filling that role.
And now it seemed she had him back again.

Versa watched Needy intentely, as he talked with the people from his past.

Amy poked Versa in the side, breaking her concentration. "Hey, don't be rude."

"Hunh, wha...?" Versa looks at Amy, confused.

Amy nods her head to where Needy was comforting the woman, Kyra. "You were starin'."

"I wasn't... I didn't mean no..." Versa blushes and shakes her head. She leans in close to Amy. "You remember that firefight we got caught in, where Needy got shot? When I had the idea to use the sonic mine to try and sabilize his condition. My foolish, foolish idea..."

"Ya, I 'member. You saved his life." Amy says placing a hand on her friends shoulder.

"Apparently, but at what cost? He's different, changed, and I can't quite put my finger on how."

"Versa, you have more book smarts than anyone I've ever known. If you say somethin' might work, then I know it's gonna." Amy smiles reassuringly at Versa. "Besides, there's your livin' breathin' huggin' proof over there."

Amy's funny finally brings a smile to Versa'a face. "Still... I wish I had my books here. Something ain't right."

Amy stands, pulling Versa up with her. "Let's give them some privacy. Let's see if you can lend some of your book smarts to the handsome doctor. And I can try and distract miss Seryn with talk of baby clothes."

"Fine" Versa mumbles as she gets to her feet,

"C'mon" Amy smiles and turns, completely oblivious to the man that had walked up behind her

"Excuse..." Milton starts but it's too late

Amy walks straight into him, stepping on his feet in the process

"Oh sorry..." she apologises, whilst Milton refrains from bursting out profanities.

Versa cringes with embarassment for her friend, but can't help but snigger a little

"Sorry, I wasn't paying attention" Amy repeats

"No, its alright" Milton replies, gritting his teeth slightly. Surprising how much pain one can be in considering the young lady didn't look that heavy.

"You'll have to pardon Amy," Versa butts in. "She can be a bit clumsy".

Amy turns her head back quickly, her eyes telling her friend to "shut up!" Versa got a little bit of satisfaction from her statement after having being told off only minutes before for being nosy, but now she was begininng to realise that her friend just might have a thing for their new passenger. And that just made it funnier.

Amy smiled nervously before repeating "sorry."

"It's alright" Milton confirmed. It was. In fact, he imagined if she had accidentally stabbed him, he would have been ok with that. Everything seemed ok now. It was as if talking with Needy had lifted all his anxieties, and that now, for the first time in a long time, the future seemed bright. That everything was gonna be ok.

"How you doing anyway?" Amy asked "You settling in ok?" It was a stupid question, she realised that straight away, he'd hardly been there long enough to make any sort of assessment. But it would seem even dumber if she tried to take the question back.

"Yeah, I guess" Milton replied, smiling.

Versa looked at the pair of them, feeling slightly sick. Again she butted in to save them, and herself, from making it more uncomfortable. "We're off to see how Seryn's coming. You wanna come?"
Then thinking to herself "Wait, why did I just ask him to come along with us? Am I crazy"

"Sure" he replied

"Dammit" Versa thought, then feigning a smile she exclaimed "Great"

As they walked towards the room Seryn was being kept, Versa broke the silence with "So, what's the story with Needy and his friend?"

Amy shot Versa a glance for her directness, then looked at Milton, hoping he would divulge the answer. Might have been nosy, but she couldn't help her curiosity.

Milton sighed for a second.

"Well you don't have to tell us if you don't want to" Amy jumped in. "It's just that, well we've known Needy for a while now, and well, he's been acting a bit strange lately. It might help to explain a few things"

"Quick thinking girl!" Versa silently congratualted her friend.

"Is that right?" Milton asked "How has he been acting?"

Amy looked at Versa, then back at Milton. "Where do we begin?"

OOC: Hope that's ok Safe, and doesn't sound so out of character for Versa and Amy. You did at one point suggest Sarah Chalke for Amy (before changing it to Mira Sorvino I believe), and since I've been watching a lot of Scrubs lately, writing an awkward pairing seemed to just come natural. Let me know if its off, and I can alter it.
I've left the story a bit open at this point, I just figured it was about time Needy's friends understand exactly what he's been through, before I move on with his story (Yes, I've got things planned)

Amy, still talking awkwardly with Milton approached the room Sykes had appropriated as an infirmary and pushed the button to open the door. Her back turned, all her attention focused on Milton, she didn't see the bed pan hurtling towards her.

Milton did however, and pulled her out of the way, swinging her round and pulling her closer into him, shielding her with his body. The bedpan hit him just above his ear, and from behind them Versa wondered how fate always managed these things in such ridiculous ways.

She grinned as both of them, almost floored, fussed over each other with much gazing into eyes and overt worrying.
Then she turned round and gasped at the scene that confronted her.

Seryn sat on the floor, still dishevelled and bloody, she'd obvious tried to walk towards where Sykes was working with rapid movements over a blanket on the sideboard, but hadn't been able to makes it.
It was absolutely soundless. other than the brush of Sykes' hands accross the blankets and the other soft sounds of his movements, then was no noise, not until it was broken by Seryns cracked whisper.

"Is he dead?"

Versa gasped, and Serynd hand tightened on the edge of a tray that had fallen to the floor, but didn't throw it. Sykes voice stopped her "No, he's alive... he's strong, his breathing, everything, his heart is fine now... can you not see it? He turned the monitor near him to face Seryn and Versa cought a view of healthy looking vital signs so what was wrong?

"So why isn't he making any noise? whats wrong with him?"

Sykes bundled up the tiny little baby and brought him over to see his mother - she looked down at him and saw that it was true - he was a perfectly healthy looking child, dark ringlets dusted his head, and bright green eyes gazed unwaveringly up at her. "Isn't that unusual? "
"Yes, i think... you need to meet him, you're ok for now, hold him a while" Sykes cought sight of Versa and beckoned her over, and both of them helped the limp Seryn onto the bed again "Sit for a while, i'm going to go find stuff i need... stay with her?" Versa nodded, and he swiftly left the room.

"He perfect - beautiful eyes!" Versa grinned down at the other woman, but got only a sad smile in return.

"Yes, he's beautiful, but... i think i've damaged him. Why isn't he crying?" Versa bit her lips and stared at the door, willing the doctor to come back.

Gagh! Doom and Gloom! It ok, no big drama - i just figured you couldn't mess with a pregnancy like she did and not have something go wrong... but no horrible deaths, in fact i think the outcome may be very interesting... but i'm still toying with that idea, so you'll all have to wait and see.

Ok, needy, get them talking! i want to see what you do next!

OOC: Excellent characterisations! Both you and Seryn!
I had forgotten what a good story this was. Even the bit players like Sykes, Kyra, Milton, Vixen, Jack, Amy, Versa and Flechette are well fleshed out.
I just need to figure out the layout of the ISSCV to fit our story. I'll get back to you on that...
