Well I know many people with English majors, but with the exception of the teachers, all of them went on to get degrees in other subjects to get a job ( doctors, lawyers, library sciences, etc.) So if you are looking for a career path major that'll bring in the cashy money...move away from the liberal arts and over to business, computers, etc. If you just want to enjoy and are content teaching, working at B & N, etc then stick to English and have a ball:) Hope that helps sweety

Well, not quite the the response I expected. But I really appreaciate everyone's help. I'm kind of in this funk right now, trying to figure out what exactly I want to do with my life. I was focused on psychology at on point, but it just doesn't seem like the right field for me. So I've been considering English, Music, all sorts of things. Library science is another area that interests me, so maybe I'll have to check that out again. At least then I might find a job with a halfway decent pay scale.

Yeah near as I can tell librarians get good pay and a really enjoyable job. Our school librarian rocks!! They really do a great job and all:)

I think msg & I are both coming from the
a) cashy money side of things
b) following your heart's desire thing
It's difficult to balance, and sometimes...more often than not...cashy money wins. Cause eating and having a roof over your head both rock. You just have to be content in what you do for cashy money. I have a degree in English, have done several diverse things in my life, and am pretty content working in a business office. I think I can speak for msg that she seems to be content teaching - but it wasn't her first choice of a career, not by a long shot.
I would also suggest look into what the up and coming careers are via the Internet. You may find something that will spark a fire.

Deepgirl - You could consider studying something else, as well. Being able to communicate is an important skill, so doing something with English wouldn't be bad, but it'd be nice to have business-y skills, too. Double major, anyone?
Besides, the degree you earn in college doesn't dictate what you do for the rest of your life (unless you specialized and wanted it that way) - it's more of a way to say, "Hey, look! I slogged through college, so this work thing will be easy!" It's the assurance for them that you'll be committed (at least, that's how most people tell me it is) and good, an asset to the company.

Library Science is not what it used to be and we have an excellent program here at the University of Michigan. (This is not a commercial; I would never send my kids here...! Just displaying my cred-is-all.) A good friend of mine went there and...well I don't know what she's doing now, I don't ever hear from her. But that aside, it might be worth checking into if it interests you.
EDIT: Hey Manik2k, you couldn't have come to a better place. Unless you like to argue rather than discuss civilly. In that case you'll need to wander over to the Real World Events section. They eat their young. Well, we do too, but only when absolutely necessary.
