Too much obsession with professional sports. Actually, just professional sports. You get these people whinging about how space travel is a waste of money, yet they are perfectly happy closely following the machinations of a "profession" that involves millions and millions being spent on boring jerks kicking (or in some cases, throwing) a ball around a field. I've got no problem with sports in an amateur capacity, though.

Hmmn. Such a broad topic and interesting responses thus far, as diverse as this site and shorter than I expected. I suspect we might get some pithier responses but don't think this one from me will be one of those.

Humanity itself includes such a broad spectrum and if we start with looking at the basic needs, per Maslow, basic survival would be at the bottom, a place to live, enough to eat, clothes, etc. At the top if all other needs are met, the assumption would be that those folks would be self-actualizing and moving toward altruistic endeavors, assisting those less fortunate in meeting their needs.

In between are all the rest of us altho I expect folks on this site have moved up the ladder and aren't on the bottom rung, having computers and all.

So my view (at this moment in time) is that humanity's biggest problem is fear of not getting enough (what they want) or loosing (holding onto) what they have. As long as we live in a state of fear and feeling that there isn't enough and we have to hold onto what we have, then there will be hoarding, fighting, war and separation. A recent thread (maybe you posted it, I don't remember) was on the topic of patriotism. It's my belief that patriotism like religion can lead to exclusivity, separation and justify greed and lack of compassion. I'm not saying patriotism and religion aren't good but rather their use in justifying behavior.

Perhaps we can never get to a place of acceptance and tolerance although I still hold out some hope. Only then, I think can we begin to work on solutions together for the good of all regardless of their country, religion or other identity.

Guess I was a bit more verbose than I planned to be.

Yes, that is an interesting and salient observation. Perhaps it goes with the belief that "if a little is good, then a lot is better." So do we continue working harder at the same thing even if it's no longer working? Or do we move on to something else, something different and see how that might work? It's always difficult to change course from the known to the unknown.

BTW. I have a cat. Does that mean I'm a nice person?
