No, really! I got some software free with a web design magazine and just messed around with it! It's really easy! I don't even have all that much image editing capability. It's not nearly so difficult to use as photoshop.
PhoenixRose - try www.gimp.org - it's basically a free version of photoshop that can also do animations. And because it's free there are dozens of tutorials on the site telling you how to do fancy things. Geekmafia uses it for his stuff all the time. I'm using Serif Draw Plus 5. There's info about it on www.serif.com - they're up to 8 or something now, which is why I got 5 free.
