Gee, the way you put it I almost feel sorry for Trek fans...almost...but not quite.

To me it is far more important to see how the crew of Serenity is gonna pull off another caper in order to put fuel in the ship, food on the table, and coinage in their pockets, than it is for me to see Enterprise and crew save the ENTIRE universe (again) from some rift in space with a recalibrated quantum-flux capacitor in a flying Delorean.

THis is the crux of the divide between TV-Trek and novel-Trek.

It's the novels that show the "real" Trekverse: what happens when the humans aren't around to hog the spotlight, what about the people who aren't in Starfleet, what about all the behind-the-scenes machinations that the Federation goes through to keep peace. . .

MAGhaffer, I completely agree with every single thing you've said.

I always saw the whole TREK bashing as a sign of a shift in our sociology in that we've somehow become cynical at the idea of peace. TREK has and will awlays be about finding tolerance and equal understanding amongst different groups of people. And yet, people lately seem to reject this idea. They want their FIREFLY's and BATTLESTAR GALACTICA's where it's all doom and gloom and two superpowers ready to blow each other out of the sky. Narratively, it makes sense. Conflict=story and entertainment.

But it's clear the Joss and Ron D. Moore have never heard John Lennon say "Give peace a chance."

I dunno. Maybe in 40 years, some sci-fi writer working in TV (or whatever mass entertainment medium) will say to himself "You know what? I'm sick and tired of angsty space captains fighting totalitarian regimes and robots trying to unravel the mysteries of the universe and being all grim and dour. Why can't we make a FUN sci-fi show?" and create something that'll set the sci-fi community on fire because it's totally different from any other sci-fi show on the air.

i watched star trek all thru high school and have in the past counted myself as a trekkie. hell i used could tell ya how to re-align the antimatter injector ports. but i think after 5 series and 10 movies, its time for paramount to drop the whole thing. i can say as a trekkie, that was odd. definitley isolated.

were there monkeys? terrible space monkeys perhaps?

MAGHAFFAR, I agree that the original Startrek was groundbreaking, but at the end of the day, the show was still all about Americans. Sulu and Uhura may not have been White, but culturally they weren't that different from Kirk or Mcoy.
All of the Trek incarnations are alike. An alien may appear as a regular cast member, but only in a secondary role. a human character can be black or brown but always has to be an American, and, with the notable exception of Ben Sisko, always has to play second fiddle to a white person.

My mother raised me right: original series to warp me suitably. (Reruns, but racial tension was pretty high back in the 70's. Still is come to think on it..)

If you can learn to want to hug a pointy eared green guy with a stick up his pi gu, then the human next door shouldn't be too hard, right?

Guess it depends on your neighbors...

ST= idealized goal of lack of human suffering to strive for. (if aliens ever decide to make contact I'll drop the "human", OK? now lay off.)
FF= human nature plopped down 500 or so years into the future.

I likes 'em both.

I can see your point, Mal is the type of guy to solve his problems with a gun, but I really don't see Firefly as "Republican propaganda" either. I don't think Mal would be too terribly inclined to align himself with any political party, especially since it was politics that screwed over him and his battalion in Serenity Valley. Politics these days is all about "which side are you on", and Mal is the type of guy that always follows his own path.

Politics aside, I have to agree with everyone and say that this was probably an isolated incident. We sci-fi fans aren't as fanatical as everyone likes to think we are (well, most of the time anyway

).
