Theory 1: Browncoat envy...

Theory 2: Her husband is the trekkie and also a Browncoat and she's had more sci-fi than she can take

Theory 3: She lost the Firefly box set in the divorce.

Star Trek features a sterilized, americanized universe, in which everyone wears a uniform.

It has no flaws, and while the federation claims to endorse cultural diversity, it really isn't very multicultural. Trek is a metaphor for globilization, pure and simple, and while shows like BAB 5 AND BSG use this basic formula, they are better, simply by virtue of having more grime and more conflict between their characters.

Takes more than combat gear to make a man
Takes more than a license for a gun
Confront your enemies, avoid them when you can
A gentleman will walk but never run

-Sting, An Englishman in New York

Speaking as a longtime fan of the original 1960s Star Trek, I have to politely but fervently disagree with this assessment. One should view the original Trek in light of the social dynamics at work in the '60s and remember here was a show where the premise was that all races and even alien species could coexist in peace and reasonable equality with one another. I feel it is highly unfair to even compare Trek to Firefly, except in several respects: both shows were WAY ahead of their time in both subject matter and socio-political ideas. Both shows generated fanatical followings that kept their shows in the public consciousness and eventually yielded movies, albeit Trek's took 10 years.

Trek presented a hopeful future to an America embroiled in a war overseas [hmmm, sound familiar?] and beset with serious racial tensions and a cold war with the Russians that threatened WWIII at any moment.

Many of the episodes in the original Trek addressed very substantive issues at a time where Sci-Fi on the tube in the '60s was epitomized by shows like "Lost in Space." Trek had the first interracial kiss on TV -- many stations in the South refused to show the episode where Kirk kisses Uhuru. The cast of characters was certainly multi-cultural and multi-racial in a TV universe that was lily white on every channel.

The original Trek viewed in the perspective of its times is nothing to be ashamed of, and the irony is, Joss would have had nothing to poke fun at if Gene Roddenberry hadn't gotten his "Wagon Train to the Stars" on TV.

As Browncoats we just might suffer the same barbs in 40 years when some future Sci-Fi show is thumbing its nose at Firefly and remarking what a lame-ass show THAT was. If so, and if I'm still able to rouse myself into my walker, I'll be right up there in their faces with a toothless "Gorram Hwoon dahn liu mangs don't know go-seh about what good Sci-Fo was!"

Reminds me of my favorite divorce joke:

What do tornadoes and divorces in Tennesee have in common? ...

Someone's gonna lose a trailer.

I wouldn't worry about it Monksdad, sounds to me like you just ran into a crazy person. Her being a ST fan was just a coincidence. That or she is just jealous because our captain can kick her captain's @$$!

I think the Vet nurse was right, the woman was a TOTAL bitch. Most Trekkies I've met have been really nice about it and respectful, as I have to them.

Could be a personal thing with her that she's allowing to foul up her dealing w/ other Browncoats. Mabye she's holding a grudge because our BDM didn't take a decade or more to make post cancellation of the show. *shrugs*

btw... a puppy named River! Too gorram cute. Could be the lady was jealous that there's no Trek equivolent name for a puppy that could be anywhere near as cute. Mabye 'Chekov' for Siberian Husky, but that's about it. Hee hee.

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

Perhaps she's just upset because her Master (Gene Roddenberry) has passed on and ours hasn't.

She CAN'T EVER get more "real" ST. Even the ideas for shows he left behind paled in comparison to the stuff he directly influenced.
She is forever "stuck" in the ST that was.

Browncoats, on the other hand, are getting comics, books, and perhaps a Serenity sequel. We have a future. Her? Not so much.

And the joke about the Tennessee trailer? Great stuff!
