Hi MsG, Tristan, FMF, Penguin, JQ, Mav, Fitch, and everyone else! Nice choice for the thread name MsG, I love Garbage!

I agree with you guys. It's definitely the little things. I mean sure I get happy about the really big stuff, but they aren't what gives you the lasting happiness. They give you happiness during that moment, and happy memories when you look back, but not a happy life. It's always the little things, like having tea on a cold, rainy day, having someone to talk to about nothing, reading the imponderable threads...stuff like that.

Math teachers. Don't get me started with them. Some of them are good and all, but when they're frustrating you like mad I know the feeling.

My vote: I agree with the research. Simply for the fact that during any day, we can carve out a few minutes for something little to make our day better, the bigger things takes a longer time. Even the 3 minutes daydreaming/reminiscing about the big things that happen helps us tolerate the daily craziness that happens in our lives.

The apocalypse? Nah, that's reserved for the day I start celebrating my birthday on a regular basis (or maybe it's reserved for the day where my birthday is a "normal" day).

FMF and Mal4Prez just had to pop out (of the birthday cakes) for you and Tristan . Freaking you out? Well, that was a bonus .

Tristan: The article was funny/sad/scary/wrong on so many levels. I just have to wonder what the country is coming to when a 40-year old taking a GED class has that little self-control to do that to a teacher (of any sort).

Good question!

I guess I'd agree. I've had some really big amazing things happen, that certainly give the happiness high, but sadly, those are often non-repeating. The little moments are easiest to reproduce, so there's always something to look forward to. Hope, I guess, is the thing.

I could be more confident in this answer if I thought I was, overall, happy. The flip side is the little moments that bring you down; often and easily repeated. (Optimistic pessimist, that's me!)

Well, it's like... a flower (trust me, this is a way better analogy than the essay one I originally thought up): the stem and the pollen are things that it needs to have in order to stand up and continue. But, it's not a flower without the petals; it's not appealing if there's no color, or design.

The big happy moments are things I think we need for life, and the little moments make it all worthwhile. Taking pleasure in little moments makes life more vibrant, and I've found that it's much easier to be content (not happy, because that emotion is fleeting) when a few seconds here and there are taken to enjoy the radiant heat from a hot beverage, or marvel at a dragonfly, or just breathe. A life where little things are not enjoyed is one that I feel is wholly squandered, because no matter how stressed you are, or how important your actions are, brief moments can be spared to revel in being alive.

Re: the math stabbing. Couldn't get past the title, really. What sorts of issues does a person have to have to react so violently to frustration that countless of my peers (read: some of my friends) feel on a daily basis?

Oh, and before I forget - birthday 'grats to the old geezers.

Much as I am loathe to do so, I must go along with the crowd. The Highs and Lows of life mark us, sometimes shape us (see my latest blogs). They can make us extraordinarily happy or grief-stricken. But that is fleeting as someone has already pointed out. True happiness (or depression) is defined by our day to day existence. If we are happy with the bland, even bitter, we can say we are happy. If the bland weighs upon us, if the slight sweetness of life does nothing to buoy us, we are indeed sad.

Blarg, this bugs me... I know what you all mean, the little awesome things in life, but it seems to me that there are so many little annoying things in life when you go to school that they sorta cancel each other somewhat.

On a sidenote, I feel like a fool, I know every word of the damn play but I keep screwing up my lines when it counts. I've got to accept it, I'm not off book even though I havent touched the script in a week. Blaaaaarrrrrgggg... I hate being bad at stuff.
