y'know, the kind of stuff you see in the star wars gaming magazine and in short stories, rpg campaigns and stuff. it can totally take place in the same universe....

this thing's got 'the adventures of han solo and a much uglier millenium falcon all over it'. and if you replace the name of the uber bad guys with 'the empire' it's the same thing.

especially the WESTERN MOTIF. let's not forget that this whole space opera/western thing has been done already and yup, it's called star wars.

it's just more overt here.

and with cowboy bebop, and some lesser known japanese anime as supporting argument it seems that the wild west and the 'new frontier' of space make for good bedfellows.

so it's derivative. that's absolutely true.

but it's really well done.

and it has some fresh ideas to offer to tv. the idea of a 'courtesan's guild' and a heroine who is a prostitute - and that prostitutes are honored high class - that's a pretty nifty idea.

and here's my obligatory geek gush about the sci fi hottie - WOW! that courtesan chick is soooooo purty. you think she'd wanna be my girl friend?

Great comparison to RPG's, mixing genres and all that. I never thought of it that way.

Some people might not like this show because there aren't any aliens, laser guns, babes in painted on clothing, etc. Then there's the "why are they still using trains/guns/chairs, etc," arguments. WHO CARES? It's a TV show. I think the people who absolutely must nit-pick it to death have been too geared on Star Trek and other similar sci-fi. I'd like to hear their explanation for sound in space.

Good perspective on all of this. I think this show is a nice breath of fresh air for science fiction. Remember, fellow geeks, it's science FICTION, not science FACT.
