I said 9-million suffocated, not 9-million killed. That's how many trees are killed for Xmas each year - enough to supply oxygen to 9-million people. Best to let the trees keep growing and generating oxygen.

So where do you run around nekked in your pagan rituals? What kind of rituals do you do? My friendly neighborhood Wiccans here in Knoxville Tennessee always perform their "church" services naked (including animal sacrifices and homosexual S&M tortures), while putting murder contracts on each other (poison is their weapon of choice). They love Xmas, and have big "family reunions" with Santa and the manger ritual play. Some are members of Senior Secret Societies franchises of Skull & Bones, and guests of Bohemian Grove. They invite convicted murderers, convicted homosexual pedophile rapists and confessed mobsters to their homes to celebrate Xmas. Been there, done that.

In almost all cases, what the religious factions of a conflict want is either freedom from the state or control over the state.

When the homogeneity of a culture is disrupted by the development of a new religion which results in a regional conflict such as in the case of religious conflicts during the Reformation, it can’t be said that religion is the cause of the conflict, since in almost all such cases historically religion was a strong influence in the culture to begin with. In fact, it is quite likely that the culture was more stable as a result of a homogeneous religion, then it would have been as simply a homogeneous ethnicity, because religion imparts to its constituents a common value system. “Thou shalt not kill” is a religious commandment, but people following such a religious commandment are less likely to be a destabilizing influence on society, and therefore historically the state has often used religion as a pedestal for stability. People advocating an anti-religious sentiment would view this as the “religion is the opiate of the masses” argument, which I’ve often seen argued simultaneously with the “religion is the cause of war” argument. These two perspectives existing together suggest that religion is not really the correct term for the impetuous behind a religious war.

It wasn’t my intention for this post to be off-topic, I had thought to include some historical musings on the development of Christianity during the post-classical period as it pertains to both the immergence of the notion of a “religious" or "holy war” as well as the immergence of the Christian notion of Christmas, but I find that I’ve run out of time tonight.

I rather naively envision a near future where we label the entire end-of-year festivities as "Potlatch" and get on with our lives. Or, simply accept the hypocrisy inherent in the consumerfest that Xmas festifities have become, at the expense of celebrating the spirit of the ritual of sharing. Of course, I'm one of those who recognises that in the beginning, man created God, though not always to nefarious purposes.
