I knew there would be sadness about this, but I'm really surprised at the sheer outrage. Myself, if James Marsters wasn't there, I wouldn't have started watching the show again after stopping about half way through last season.

Does the WB have any reality shows? None leap to mind. As far as I know, their big draw is teen dramas, or dramas targeted for the teen audience.

And I sincerely doubt that after giving Angel its outrageously wonderful time slot this season that they have it in for Joss. Remember: Angel follows the WB's current flagship show, Smallville. You can't ask for a better time slot.
To me, I feel that they did everything they could to save it, but it was too late.

It has good ratings! This is what network execs do! They say "you can only keep your show if you jump through this intricate series of flaming hoops." Then, when Joss jumps through every hoop perfectly they say "nevermind, we're cancelling the series anyways." "We want to put on another reality show about monkeys dating each other, performing feats, eating worms and getting voted off an island by B-list celebrities."

I think when you promise WB that Sarach Michelle Gellar is going to be on your show during sweeps, and then that just doesn't happen, there's going to be hell to pay.

Honestly, I think this season got the go ahead not only because of James Marsters and the new concept but because of some promises of SMG showing up.

Though all things must come to an end it is getting to the point to where i really do not need to have cable anymore. Losing Angel is one of the last straws.

The WB did everything they could to save Angel from the WB cancelling Angel? To me, it would seem the obvious way to avoid cancelling a show is to...not..cancel it.

I don't quite understand this statement. Save it from what? It had good ratings...

The WB did everything it could to save Angel from the decline in ratings. A decline in ratings is what causes the cancellation of a show. Placing it in its plumb time slot didn't help, neither did bringing Marsters on board.

It may have had "good" ratings, but it never had "great" ratings. This is the American Corporate Model which continually tells us "If you aren't getting bigger, you are a failure." Marsters plus new time slot was supposed to increase ratings, not keep them on an even keel. Ratings did not grow, and even declined slightly. Show gets cancelled.

Saddness. I love Angel and heck, all of Whedons' programs. If it weren't for the History channel and Joss Whedon I wouldn't bother getting cable! Joss has recreated TV drama in a unique way that needs to be recognized. Let's face it, if HUSH had won an emmy Joss would have more clout.

Advice to Joss and Co. - Get some clout!

Ratings were up 11% this season. Critical reviews of this season were also more positive. The only mediocre review is the new york post article on the 100th episode, where the writer said it was hard for anyone to get the show because of its "complex plots, subtle humor, and chamelionic characters." Of course, I love the complex plots, subtle humor, and well-developed, interesting, dynamic characters.

Also, bringing Marsters on board was not Joss's original plan--he did it at the request of the WB. If it wasn't for the WB, which wanted all Buffy fans to get their fix on Angel, Spike would still be dead (unless that Faith series happened).

The real reason the show was cancelled was costs. It's a very expensive show. And all of the contracts expire this year, so they'd have to renegotiate with the cast, crew, marketing, etc., and it would most likely be a stressful, time-consuming, cost-raising event.

That's also why "Angel" will almost certainly not be picked up by another network--it's ratings are too low for bigger networks (FOX, ABC, NBC, CBS) and it's too expensive for smaller networks (UPN, PAX, PBS, basic cables channels, first run syndication).

The WB was a perfect fit for "Angel" and now we're screwed.
